But Steven's journey ends with him sperging out at Connie for refusing to marry him, nearly killing Greg for no reason and then finally driving away from Beach City forever, what the fuck, and this is probably the last he'll see of him because the new spinoff is about Lars.

It was basically Stevens turn to be a shithead with serious issues since he spent nearly his entire childhood running around and fixing shit to save Earth and later the Gem Empire, the partial problem is that this juxtaposition of confronting his adventures happening after a multi year time skip means that last 2 years have went swimmingly or that stuff is just bottled down even harder than the old stuff from the original series. The juxtaposition of cartoon logic and mythical hippie dippie bullshit being confronted with the harsh realities of the "real" world can work but the execution is very off. The awkwardness doesn't feel organic in the slightest stylistically with the series or from a meta context either.

To be fair, the van thing kinda skews people's perspective on Greg. He was still fairly young when he was touring with Marty, then he settled down, got a house built for Steven, and a steady enough job to afford food/entertainment. Never telling Steven about his human side of the family was a really bad move, but otherwise he did okay.

Its just that his appearance and not living in the house himself (even though the carwash is right behind the hill) gave people the impression that he was a neglectful bum.

I do admit I never knew what to make of what the show wanted me to think about Greg Universe, considering that all the reasons he should be considered a bad dad tend to be negated by the fact his own son is being held hostage by space lesbians that made it clear early on they can and will just take Steven away from him and that he's lucky enough to see him regularly as it is. Tbh I even liked the idea of him growing up to resent the whole child soldier in an intergalactic war and beach hippy thing, especially once its settled and there is no role for him anymore, leading him to crave order and structure in his life and seeking out his family and grandparents. It was a surprisingly mature and deep idea, no wonder they managed to fumble it, Basically, the entire continuation series was just one good idea after another thrown in, all worthy to be explored in depth, like what happened to the Gem Empire and its renegades, who was Steven's human family, Pink Pearl, what happened with Lars of the Stars and so on, but it should have been wrapping things up, not including even more shit that never gets followed up on. Also, Centipeedle/Nephrite, one of the most central characters in the series, present since the first episode and her arc following through everything not getting an episode with Steven and a proper sendoff is just fucking criminal, all these years later I'm so fucking mad about it I'm going to make some chili from scratch now to get my mind off of it, thanks OP.

I hate this episode because of the sheer ambiguity. I used to think that Greg was just a selfish ass who ran out on his parents who gave him a big house and stability. But the episode is definitely leaning towards them being abusive. But either way, his decision to run away on a whim, change his name, and then never take his son to see his folks was portrayed as a negative.

The short episode runtime and their complete lack of ability to storyboard didn't help. Each episode feels like they just introduced something that would need an entire season to unpack properly, to fit the slow burn development and tone of the show before, but then they immediately jump on the next one and shovel even more shit on you. Like, slow the fuck down assholes, Steven's human family alone and reconnecting with them would something that'd warrant an entire season. The fall and remnants of the Gempire which we never really saw even would deserve as much attention too. Such an extended epilogue should RESOLVE things, not introdoce dozens of new ones

Damned if I know. SU first ending built upon the final season taking things in the direction of making the conflict into a metaphor for dealing with an overly-controlling and abusive family that won't accept you for who you are. In that context, ending things with Steven telling off White Diamond and saying "you can accept me for who I actually am, or you can get the hell out of my life" sort of works. Kinda. Metaphors shouldn't get bogged down in "but won't people be experiencing PTSD from all the shit your awful family put them through?"

The movie worked better as an ending by dialing in on one specific last bit of his mom's garbage that Steven cleaned up, emerging feeling good.

The trouble with Future was that the show reduced things down to a metaphor at the end of the conflict, then SUF flipped back to NOT treating things like a metaphor. Universe screwed the pooch by acknowledging all the destruction and damage, going so far as to zoom in on the fact that Steven has fucking PTSD. You can't end the conflict with a cartoonish "and then he defeated the evil empire by laughing at it, and making the god-Queen realize she was fallible" then shove in an epilogue about how traumatized the main character was afterward. Suddenly we were meant to remember that there had been real stakes and trauma, which in turn meant that letting the Diamonds off with a slap on the wrist doesn't work with the story any more.

Future fucked it all to hell by acknowledging that the PTSD and shit was real, and undermining the whole "look, it's a metaphor, just enjoy the happy ending" angle they took with resolving the war. Steven's whole life fell apart and everyone BUT him got a happy ending, apparently just to say "it's okay to have PTSD and need therapy." Nobody wanted to watch Steven completely fall apart just to be told "he gets therapy later. Offscreen."

It’s a show that always championed humanity and all it’s messiness above all. (hot dogs etc). A kid as abnornal as he is, with the upbringing he had, was never not going to end up messy and confused, at least during the inherently messy and confusing stage of early adolesence.
There’s probably something to be said about gender - raised in and embodying the soothing and accepting nature of ideal femininty, but once puberty hits and he wants to take control of himself, his direction, and wants to be more assertive and aggressive against that which threatened and hurt him - he has a huge conflict of self and turns into a giant angry penis monster.
Does this mean it was wrong? Absolutely not. He saved the universe and he helped change countless people for the better. He has teenage angst and identity crises, but many accomplishments to his name and many loyal loved ones.

It’s not about perfection, because that’s boring and sterile and fake and people-pleasing. And it wants to relate to (You) and all your messiness, while giving you hope. (“I can make an effort, if I only understand, that I, I can make a change”)

And because of all the hard work Steven put into being a good guy and helping people at their lowest, he ended up with a small army of people who wanted to help him at his lowest. I think future is more meant for teenagers than kids - like Steven - because it’s not total idyllic fantasy idealism, it’s realistic idealism that’s accepting of flaws and imperfection. Unlike a lot of teenage media from my time, it doesn’t do realism by focusing on sadness and anger and presenting tragedy as the end.
It’s realistic in showing how suppressing negative feelings can eventually result in a volcanic eruption of them. How you can hate/be confused about yourself so much you turn into a monster. But it also shows the realism that a willingness to work on things, heal, revaluate yourself and be reacquainted with your strengths - how putting work into your relationships and community can result in a strong support system that will save you - are all things that will work. You can follow your devil into your Hell and thus gain a fuller understanding of yourself, but you don’t have to stay there.
