Comics keep forgetting that they started off as really goofy. For so fucking long they want to convince the world how edgy and grown up they are, causing their product to suffer. Meanwhile, Eastern Media has no problem embracing its goofy self and still being respected by so many people.
The Watchmen and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight have done irreversible damage to Marvel/DC Comics

Comics were more serious at first.
The problem with this culture, since its based on commercial values, is that properties are put on a pedestal instead of being used as a foundation to build upon. DC keeps selling Watchmen in variations, cranking out prequels and crossovers, instead of mandating that a portion of their output be about that level of quality (though technically, they kind of tried with Vertigo). Watchmen and TDKR were built upon prior works to get to where they're at. Your ilk keeps putting blame on the ones that did it right for what others do wrong, and that's stupid.
Manga does so well because they more or less build on each other. They also balance light and shade. They don't go full goofball unless it's a comedy series.

One Piece is inherently cartoony & goofy by it's art style alone. It's just taken seriously because the story is serious. And it's been running for 28 years. The only reason people see comics as a kids medium is because of Wertham. Comics like the stuff being put out by EC were immensely popular, and flash forward just two or three decades later and the UK is making tons of comics for late teen adult audiences like Battle and Action and 2000AD. The idea that comics are just for kids is just such a blatantly untrue statement.

It isn’t. The show is about Peacemaker’s redemption journey. His dad was a fucking KKK leader that Peacemaker had to kill last season. The world where his brother and dad are alive and appear to be good guys but the rest of the world is nazis is a subversion designed to explore Peacemaker’s character growth and his inability to process his feelings and guilt.

That’s why the entire goddamn season has been about him wanting to escape to a parallel world he found by accident that he thinks is perfect, because it offers him a dad that genuinely loves him, his dead brother that he accidentally killed as a child is alive there, he’s a celebrated hero by the public and he even has a loving girlfriend in alt-Hardcourt, unlike in our world where Hardcourt doesn’t respond to his feelings and thinks what they shared at the board was a mistake. And, keep attention now dipsit, because it’s a dark comedy show, Peacemaker was so enamoured by his fantasy of perfect life that he failed to pick up it’s a nazi world until someone else points all the signs to him. The season is about how you can’t escape your issues and problems. That isn why everything goes to shit when his duplicity is revealed to the nazi world counterparts: he becomes wanted by Nazi authorities, his dad is killed again by Vigilante who is against the nazi status quo his dad basically maintains by not fighting against it, his brother hates him because he accidentally got his counterpart killed as well as their dad, etc.

But you ignore all that because you want to play an oppressed victim because nazis are depicted as being bad people. Oh boo fucking hoo. How revealing about what kind of person you are.

Wrong. Vigilante of Earth X was a one-man resistance movement against nazis and wanted to Kill Auggie-X because he just considered him a Nazi. Something that comically turned out to not really be true. Prime-Vigilante has no problem with Waller or people working for her because she’s just a government bureaucrat that was eventually kicked out and doesn’t act as a representative of a genocidal regime. She just ran black ops shit and Vigilante thinks that’s cool. He could kill Waller under certain circumstances but that’s about it.

>Yes but you do eventually need to swing the pendulum the other way, suffering itself just becomes numb
Not just that, but if you make a character suffer too much, if you take eveything away from them and just leave them like that, the narrative that both the audience and later writers end up internalizing becomes "this character is supposed to be tragic", their relationship was "supposed" to end in tragedy, they were "supposed" to be powerless to save family members, etc. Maybe adaptations even end up taking this route because it just becomes the unquestioned interpretation of who that character is.

The actual audience for most comics was always kids and teens, the whole reason the "think of the children" outrage over the EC horror and crime comics took off in the first place because it was kids reading those books, not adults. The British comics you name were also primarily read by teen audiences.

The idea that the American comics industry would have become more like Japan and people of all ages would be reading comics if not for Wertham and the CCA is just a widespread delusion. It would've ended up more like Britain, where more 'mature' comics existing didn't do anything to change the deep-rooted "comics are for kids" perception amongst the masses that also exists in America. Horror comics came back in the 70s, especially in the magazine format that was outside the jurisdiction of the CCA, but it largely wasn't adults reading them.

Suffering can be used to build character, but it can also just be suffering for no reason, or sometimes suffering for the sake of suffering; it depends on how it's implemented into the story. What the suffering means to the character or what it does or doesn't teach them matters.

True. People who never suffer see the smallest slight as the greatest suffering. Sort of like how a baby will think it’s the end of the world if you take away a piece of candy. Imagine you’ve never felt pain, but one day you stubbed your toe. It’d be one of the worst moments in your life. In every aspect of their life the wealthy are all like this. Tell them no, and you get the emotional response of a toddler.

It depends on your definition of goofy. Is it goofy now? Absolutey. Back then, Superman jumping over buildings and the like was moreso meant to be seen as bombastic. You’re supposed to go “wow, that guy jumped over a building, cool”, not “look at that silly man in a costume jumping over buildings, how wacky”. There’s humor in old comics of course, but the entire thing itself is not meant to be 100% humorous. It’s like how the Sopranos is a serious show, but sometimes you just laugh at the fat Italians doing silly fat Italian shit.
