popular for normies vs popular on /co/
What makes something popular for normies vs popular for /co/? Kpop Demon Hunters is uber popular, but you don't see constant threads on /co/ about it
Anonymous No.150756258 >>150756274 >>150756547 >>150774632 >>150774977 >>150776321 >>150782234 >>150782526 >>150782797 >>150783298 >>150795755
Pretty sure /co/ counts this and Nezha as /a/ material. Might be wrong though.

In my humble opinion, KDH might be popular but there's not many things to talk about. It's a serviceable music video with decent animation, endearing "what real girls are like" characters and a rather predictable story with catchy music. I fell asleep right before the "break up" portion of movie but woke up just in time for the fantastic finale.

But yeah that's it. Like it or hate it, that's all I really have to say about it.

I think it's a matter of what maintains long-term discussion here.
I know /co/ has a sizable femanon crowd but we're still mostly guys and for whatever reason the K-Pop girls didn't appeal to Anons here.
Ruby Gillman is probably one of the most glaring examples of something that wasn't popular among normalfags but popular on /co/ albeit for the wrong reasons since that was built more on disappointment, frustration, and wasted potential with new information that lasted months.
I think K-Pop Demon Hunters would've found its place among /co/ had this board not become a hollowed out husk by then but also as I'm typing this down I think the rise of alternative places for discussing comics and cartoons played a role in why certain audiences would thrive elsewhere.

Maybe but it's still K-Pop. A genre not really talked about a whole lot on /co/. Because like I said, it's basically an extensive music video of a Kpop album. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy it. But there's not enough controversy, waifu bait, or gushing over the animation to warrant many threads for it.

Okay? I agree? But it's still KPOP, anon. I never said it doesn't belong on /co/. Just that I've seen people say it leans closer to /a/ like Nezha. Which I personally hate because I really wanted to talk about Nezha 2 with people but /co/ doesn't find it cartoony enough and /a/ doesn't find it gay enough.

/a/ doesn't allow any western stuff, and kpop is a western movie.
/co/ doesn't talk about it much ironically because it's also not gay enough for the autistic gays who make up most of the modern online cartoon community.
It's mostly made for tween girls and their moms, as is the case with most kpop in general.

Be good at being competent. Do nothing terrible but nothing great. Maybe have some catchy tunes that is with the flavor of the generation.
You could have replaced the kpop elements of KDH with New Kids on The Block or N Sync style boybands and the oriental parts with generic grim reaper vs damned souls, release it in the 00s and it would have had a huge spark like KDH did now, only to be completely forgotten in a year with people going "oh yeah, that movie was alright I guess."

I don't like k-pop so perhaps I'm not the right audience for this but I couldn't watch more than 10 minutes.

The whole "Super perfect popstars are ACTUALLY normal people who binge eat fast food and stuff when they're not on stage" was the most boring, hackneyed lamost fan servicey characterization they could have done. Characterization that felt at odds with the whole part time super dedicated warriors against evil shtick. I would have been more intrigued if these humanizing flaws were actually detrimental to the characters and not just quirky bullshit.

Speaking of fan service, the way the protagonists glazed the fans and treated them like the most important thing ever was cringe inducing. Because you, yes (you) the guy personally watching this movie are actually loved by the celebrity you worship! It made me feel legit embarrassed to be considered this movies "audience".

The animation is nice and maybe the story develops in an interesting way beyond that opening but I wasn't sold enough to suffer through a musical about music I don't like.

Itโ€™s the new Frozen, but itโ€™s partly because of the mostly incest shipping circlejerk of Frozen (along with homestuck, gravity falls, and horse board) that generals canโ€™t exist on /co/ anymore and just get booted to /trash/.

A weekly show can still find its /co/ audience because there will be constantly new things to talk about and so reasons to keep threads going. Itโ€™s harder to justify making new threads on movies the same way past the first week. The binge watch shows have a similar issue but do tend to have more content and S2 speculation to give it a small shot in the arm.

If Netflix go ahead with a full animated series for KDH, it will probably find more traction for discussion here.

Symphogear starts a little slow but at its best is better written than KPDH and the set action pieces are more interesting. Of course most people would drop before it gets there. See, shit like that gif is why I couldn't get into Symphogear. It's just too silly. And I'm a lifelong anime watcher so I have a high tolerance for anime silliness.

KPDH sounds like it would be a wacky concept too, but it's actually really grounded. All it took was the synopsis at the start of the movie and I was on board.
Music igniting the souls of the audience and focusing that power on the musicians is a cool concept, and it's only a short step from "play music to drive away evil spirits" which is common in religion.
And the Huntrix weapons are ceremonial tools related to korean shamanism. When you understand the background it makes perfect sense how the demon hunters turned into pop stars in the modern era.

Meanwhile Symphogear had weird mech transformations which seems totally out of step with any sort of mystical connection with the audience or the power of song.

I wish the mods would actually be specific what does and doesn't count as western. If we went with the literal definition only Anglosphere and western Europe cartoons and comics would be allowed because if you refered to Mexico and Russia as examples of "Western civilization" you would get laughed out the room in any other situation. Then you have things that aren't western no matter how you stretch the terms like middle eastern, African , central Asian and S.E.A which while rare does pop up a cartoon every once a while. That should mean Western by /co/ standards is anything not from the Sinosphere but mods will turn a blind eye to Korean/Chinese things if they look close enough like a western cartoon. Look I just like consistent rules, not a fan of Anarcho tyranny.
