Weirdly enough, this is the episode where I stopped watching TNG. I looked up the plot synopsis before starting the episode and rather than skipping it, I just decided to stop there. I might go back, but it won't be for a while.

I'm still pissed off about how they properly, because their previous appearances barely count introduced a race as cool as the Ferengi in DS9 just to remove literally everything that made them special by the end of the series

The Federation isn't socialist. It's functionally post-scarcity, questionably post-monetary, and what little we see of its economy and internal politics points to an incredibly hands off and non-interventionist government. If anything the Federation should be classified as some kind of libertarian. Though it should be noted that despite the name the Federation is fairly close to a confederation in terms of how it operates, so there very well could be socialist constituent states within the Federation.
