We don't know if he was a good or bad man.
All of our sources on him are very biased.
We have his son and Bartolome de las Casas, who for their own legacy or political mission, praised him as a noble adventurer.
And then there are Columbus's political enemies who principally wanted him removed as the governor of Hispaniola.
I generally value the words of Las Casas a bit more, he is a man very worthy of respect, so I'd say he was mostly an alright guy, but a terrible colonist.
Notably a lot of what his political enemies critiqued him over was being too lenient with the natives, so I'm inclined to think he was an asshole to his crew, his subordinates, but probably alright with his native allies.
Columbus's voyages were principally to set up posts to allow for trading with the orient. But he did say in his writings to the kind and queen of Spain that the people of the Caribbean could be turned into subjects.
He was mainly just an explorer. What happened next wasn't his call
