Ok, it’s been a while since I watched it. But, isn’t there a scene in the first or second episode of season 1 of Bojack where he fucks a barely legal girl he picked up in a bar? But it’s treated as a throwaway gag because it’s some literal who background character that is never mentioned before or since?

It’s fun to think that you can make people care about stuff with a simple change in framing. Penny is only special because there’s a whole episode building drama and context around the scene.

The lady in that scene was Sarah Lynn, the drug addict ex child star and pop star who played his daughter on tv and who he unintentionally inspired to become a washed up has been like himself, and then he continued to fail helping to improve her life every chance he got until she overdosed on a drug bender doing his heroine with him. They were on the bender because Bojack felt so guilty about almost fucking Penny.
