I saw Ares and it's genuinely just okay. I think that's the real tragedy, it's fairly competent but just very unremarkable.
The main problem is it doesn't have the spectacle or wow-factor of the first two films. Where they tried to offer you a big imaginative fantasy world and themes of control, Ares puts a Recognizer and a couple jets in a real city and tries to introduce a commentary about AI without actually saying anything about it. It just lacks the scope and ambition of the first two.
Also, I feel a lot was lost in all the rewrites; stuff like the 80s Grid and Flynn's existence therein are not at all well explained in Ares.
It not having any of the characters or following any plot threads from Legacy really sucks too, actually it immediately undos the hopeful ending Legacy ended on, and also ignores the sequel hooks that TRON: The Next Day etc set up. Ares overall felt like the Disney DVD sequel to Legacy.

It's such a weird introduction to the plot. The way i understood it, this 29 mins thing was only relevant for Dillinger Systems because maybe their lasers were knocking off the Encom one, and weren't as good? I don't see why else this would be a thing, otherwise Quorra should be dead.

The oldest nepos in history have always been whites with a lot of money, lots of fame or lots of dirt on powerful people. Leto is all of them. He MUST have some nasty ass SHIT on someone in Hollywood. Some kind of Baby-eating secret that would banish someone's fortune in a matter of hours.

It sucks. The soundtrack is great and there's nice visuals, but I couldn't give two shits about this convoluted plot about bringing the Grid into the real world.
It gets so stupid at one point that Jared Leto literally enters the 80s Tron world, with the same outdated visual effects, and meets Flynn with no explanation given.

Legacy's plenty good, but I feel the Uprising cartoon really elevates it. Definitely watch both, those're the peak of the franchise. Also the Tron: The Next Day short is cute.

The 80s movie IS very slow-paced, which is why I feel it's maybe important to watch the documentaries on its production first, so you have the full context on WHY it's impressive. Then when you watch the movie, you'll be able to get a form of "damn, that's impressive" like if you watched it when new, at least I like to think.
These assholes were rendering CGI without any previews to see what they were doing, they had to map the XYZ and tilt values for each object in a scene for every single frame on graph paper, before sending it to the rendering computers and hope it comes out right, like, a day later.
They rotoscoped all the circuitry onto the actors' costumes by hand, AGAIN frame by frame, dude. The process for the glow effect involved several hand-painted layers.

The videogames and tie-in comics are also all surprisingly good. TRON 2.0 (get the GoG version and Killer App mod, it's great), the Ghost in the Machine, Tron Betrayal, all worth trying out.
Even those two newer games that came out recently (Tron Identity + Catalyst) are apparently very decent. Never played Tron Evolution, but hear it's decent enough aside from some padding, so maybe worth a shot.

I liked elements of it, not the worst blockbuster to come out this year by any stretch but that being said it was a significant step down from Legacy in every way.

The world-building especially was lacking. So little is spent in the grid and most of it is just in a single room where Dillinger talks to Ares. The music was fine at times but other times it felt out of place. The costumes and action all felt subpar outside of a few moments. Also felt a lot of it was edited out or rewritten after the fact.
