But the thing is, a lot of /pol/ posting and 4chan frustrations are due to impotence towards doing anything in real life. In the Trek universe, you can always sign up to become part of a new colony/outpost and start life away from the federation even. Nobody is going to stop you unless you go for Marquis and straight up tries to undermine the federation/starfleet decisions. It's the ultimate libertarian solution. So 4chan would be finally more hobby centered because otherwise people would tell you to just shut the fuck up and get in a shuttle and start your own colony somewhere and stop whining like a bitch.

Getting into Trek is easy:
>Start with TNG or a greatest hits of TOS
>Add DS9 to the mix (for best results assuming a linear viewing start DS9 partway through season 6 of TNG as the shows overlapped for two seasons and there is some crossover)
>once you finish TNG you can move on to the TNG films or add in more TOS and the TOS films
>once you finish DS9 you can either watch VOY or ENT - VOY is self-contained while ENT is a prequel

The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, and Enterprise along with the 6 TOS films and 4 TNG films make up what is considered classic Trek. There is also Star Trek: The Animated Series, which was an animated continuation of TOS produced in the 70s that isn't usually considered part of classic Trek because the people running the franchise didn't really consider it canon until recently (despite being largely unused TOS scripts) and a lot of people haven't seen it.
