Well with people like him usually they have highs and lows. I'm sure he didn't do anything like cut himself or attempt before, someone like nathan strikes me as someone that just does it no fanfare probably not even a note. He probably is the type to not want to be a burden in life now that he's dead he's forgotten all his worldly troubles plus it's implied Kathy and nate hadn't seen each other in years. So just having his family around makes him forget why he was ever so lonely/depressed.

Idk why the ben ep was pretty funny, also the book voice change in the ben subplot about being more emotionally available.
Yeah sometimes you connect with the characters and so the humor doesn't have to be as well over the top. Also as some have said before honestly the reason asshole characters and sailor swearing characters exist is because they are easier to write. You can make them do "insert funny thing" because they are a asshole no need to have a reason or make it fit because they are just assholes and weird.
Example is like modern family guy, aka soulless family guy. Most of the griffins were assholes to begin with but now they are all borderline sociopathic bullies to one another so you can shoot out a joke a second and at least one will be a kneeslapper. same with the simpsons can't imagine half of the stuff they do now coming from the earlier versions as they really were good people who just had flaws. Now they are just assholes that hate each other or mostly don't have much sympathy for one another like before. Like lisa and how much she shits on her family now, compared to in the older stuff where she'd just be disappointed or apologize for overstepping now she's usually just a brat about it and doesnt' care how she hurts their feelings. Same with homer and being a jerk to marge etc. It makes the characters easier to set up jokes by making them caricatures but also kills their likability
