The Boxing Daria episode pretty clearly mirrors autism

not at all
being smart alienates your peers
alienation brings loneliness
this isn't hard

Her mom describes her not getting along with her peers in the show but never says it's because of her being smart. Also, you can be smart and autistic and girls often are.

Did you even watch the show? You know she was smart with how much she rather read than play.

I'm not saying she isn't smart, you just can't read.
I'm saying that being smart isn't the only thing going on here, look at Jodie, who is shown time and time again to be equally as smart as Daria but has better social skills.

Daria, do you think you're better than everyone else?

she never says she is better than everyone else and she actually hates the attention she gets when she does flex her intellect
a good chunk of the show is daria having to face all the exact same things that every teenager has to face no matter how much she tries to say she is above it all

>You know she was smart with how much she rather read than play.
She found a hobby that tacitly indicated she wasn't available for socialization in public when she was over stimulated.

As someone who has dated girls with autism, yes. She probably was in some capacity.

You’re reaching. Daria is misanthropic but she’s very socially aware, can read non verbal communication, etc. There are literally no signs of autism. Being smart or a social outcast is not a sign.

>Daria is misanthropic
Misanthropes don't struggle with voice tone or facial communication, if anything they tend to be very expressive. Spergs on the otherhand do struggle.

NTA, but smart autists can often mimic social awareness cognitively by deliberately studying people and understanding the situation through learned reason rather than unconscious instinct. It's slow, unnatural and very tiring, but it makes them seem more normal than they really are.

This. A lot of the time I fake chuckle or laugh at other peoples jokes or antics but I have never understood how someone could genuinely chuckle or laugh in day to day conversation. I often have to remind myself to have a half smile too when in conversation as I naturally approach talking to people with a "resting bitch face". It's taken me years to do it, but most people don't even know I am autistic because of masking and only realize when I tell them directly or othertime when they realize I hyperfiaxte on interests or topics. I have even developed mannurisms just for strangers or dates where I am smiley and jovial because I know I am unlikely to see them again so there is no pressure in maintaining that level of energy for the facade. I have even learned what people find typically funny with jokes or personal ancedotes and do it to appear more natural, even though I don't understand how they could be funny to begin with yet it works regardless on other people.

when people say smart, they mean academically intelligent, which daria undoubtedly is
her lack of sociability is a result of her absolute devotion to not being shallow and inability to compromise on that as well as a self-defense mechanism to protect herself from being emotionally hurt

jodie does show that you can be sociable and intelligent, but she is also forced to put on a facade 24/7 and be little miss perfect, which is something daria wouldnt approve of on principle

If that's true Zoomers are correct and should be congratulated for their perception.

Zoomers are pretty irony poisoned, though, I doubt they would respect any subculture outside of basic aesthetic.

She reads at the college level
And while reading doesnt automatically equate with intelligence, daria is definitely critically engaging with what she reads and isnt simply skimming it
She was definitely written with realistic intelligence and not dexters lab style super smartness

It's just plain social anxiety. Otherwise she's just settle into whatever 'Nerd' or 'AP' clique that existed at Lawndale. The fact that she doesn't shows that she fears judgement and rejection from those least likely to.
Being forced into Brittany's social circle would unironically be the best thing for her, as Brittany would automatically consider her a friend, and Daria would learn how to deal with interacting with her peers, both friendly and unfriendly alike.

Very well-put.

I think whether a smart person becomes a "Daria" or a "Jodie" depends on what kind of parenting they got. Daria's parents, flawed as they were, still set instilled the value of authenticity. Daria's mom in particular was the kind of feminist that would never tell her daughter to be anything she wasn't. Jodie's parents, on the other hand, were all about wearing masks, because they had to in order to be successful in white-dominated fields.

Oh man, are you me? lol. I basically learned how to get along with people by just copying mannerisms and speech patterns, to the point that I can now effortlessly fit in with anyone. It turns out people get REALLY fucking comfortable with you when you just mirror their own friendly behavior back at them. It's so fucking obvious that you'd think they'd catch onto it, but instead they just keep opening up more and more because they feel safe when they don't detect any dissident attitudes from you.

The downside of it is that, to some extent, it feels like I've forgotten who I actually am. There are very few people in the world I feel safe being "myself" around, because I'm super fucking weird and people get bothered by me. Heck, my own parents were bothered by me—they were basically the first people I learned to appease by putting on an act.

>>150866520
I think there's a good argument to be made that even a non-autist would do that by virtue of being a horny teenager, which Daria was—she was just afraid to show it.
