It's because of the flat earth setup and the double wammy of the dome. It's an out of nowhere gut punch you wouldn't think twice about with it being setup at the start and then paying off at the end. If it weren't for that most people would write it off.

Crazy how the funniest episode was the pilot. It was made years before the show got greenlit, meaning they lost their touch before the show got greenlit and have been on a constant slide since then. Even R&M managed to get two solid seasons in before becoming unwatchable.
