I started with Johns' run back in the day. So Superman: Secret Origin, if you're not sick of Clark's origin being retold for the hundredth time (it's a good comic and a good retelling, but I know I would get annoyed if I kept asking for recs and kept getting origin retellings). And then his Action Comics run proper, #837-870 (a couple arcs there aren't Johns but they're not too bad). Technically, his run doesn't quite end at 870, which is the end of the Brainiac arc, but after that it's confusing event fuckery with New Krypton and I don't think it's worth it.

I remember liking 2003's Superman/Batman by Loeb too, though I only read the first few arcs.

There's also the easy mode answer of Superman Adventures from 1996, which is based on the DCAU cartoon. It was generally pretty fun. Dini even wrote some of the issues himself.

Okay, let's calculate the burgers. Going to say the plates have 35 basic burgers on average. It's not clear how many waiters are in the building, but will just put it around 30-35. Now a Krabby Patty is going to have a higher calorie count due to all the ingredients, and between the sauce and the patty's recipes not being known it's hard to say for certain how that affects the true total. Worth noting that the patties are not meat, but to be fair the numbers will mostly assume that whatever's in them is about equivalent to hamburger meat. Regardless, whatever number the Krabby Patty is at would likely be around two to three times the calories of a normal burger. This would put the Superman total around 60,000 to 130,000 burgers. Not as many, but still more than SpongeBob could presumably cook in a day.

I love Looney Tunes and Daffy is the best pick from it, though I'm more of a Marvin guy. I think going the entire first season of Mr. /co/ without a Looney Tunes winner would be baffling. I also have a bit of a concern that no longer having a limit will speed up people getting sick of Looney Tunes characters in these, but that's a future concern. Daffy is a fun icon of the golden age of animation and has always been just as fun in the threads. You would be despicable not to vote for Daffy.

I can't think of a more fitting way to end the first season of Mr. /co/ than for finally getting to see Jack retire. After getting so close 3 other times and possibly being rigged against in his first run, I think it's time to give Jack the break he wants and retire him. His show is one of CN's most iconic, a board staple, and it's hard to imagine the first season of Mr. /co/ without Jack. Even when people thought he was too quiet in 2023, it lead to his current, and honestly, hilarious campaign. Let's get Jack back to the past and flung into the Mr. /co/ throne.

This one was really hard for me to choose. Goofy has been a surprise this year, but a welcome one. Another icon of the golden age of animation and a good rep for a Disney original that only has one. I especially like Goofy for his fatherly antics and I wish Max got a bit further. That Goofy animation campaign has also been some of the funniest things I've seen this year. Gawrsh, I think Goofy would be a cool winner.

Realistically he could have bowed out at quarterfinals or semi-finals, and might have been the best outcome. His hype campaign gets recorded, but he doesn't get top honors like he ended up getting. I still personally blame the Elite Eight choices on the whole. AM capping where he did made sense with general thoughts toward him as a candidate last year, and Sam was just too much of a nutcase. JC and Raiden really were the most pure normalcy picks left after the fourth round, and they had to face each other right after that. Shadow is the kind of pick you expect to get a great campaign before capping out to some powerhouse in the Elite Eight. We got to see what happens whenever there aren't many true powerhouses that make it back: he won.

In other words? Had Doomguy and Wario made it back, I feel there would have been more checks for Shadow than what we got. Good odds those two would have beaten their opponents if nothing else changed, so you'd basically have Shadow against three strong tournament faces in semi-finals. That could definitely have been enough to change the perception around him as a winner. Instead two of the actual semi-finalists were Sam, who had a fun yet very batshit campaign on top of having a tougher argument to be the second Metal Gear winner, and Peppino, who while a great character is just too new to show a lot of sticking power. It's really not a shock that JC and Shadow both made it and had a relatively close match in the finals.

Wouldn't be surprised if King does get a bounce back despite what some are fearing. Does seem tournaments can get drawn to oddball or unexpected winners every few years. The third years of Queen and King are a prime example of that. King just had Garland and Grimm come along to fill spots that would have otherwise likely gone to returning tournament powerhouses from the first three years of King. Shadow was just the next surprise winner after Batter.

Doomguy lost by seven votes, so he was at minimum around the same power level. Feel momentum would have balanced it out, though for what that's worth he would have had to beat JC in semi-finals to even face Shadow. Could have been a similar argument, except it would have been more the returning powerhouse vs. the surprisingly strong campaigner for finals. Basically what we got regardless, in fact. Wider point I was getting at is that the Elite Eight on the whole was somewhat off from what anons had expected, and whenever the line-up got announced Shadow had a lot more room to come up as one of the best options to take the win. Perception matters a lot.

Wario is an interesting case, and unlike Doomguy last year I do think you could argue he's actually weaker than perceived. He basically lost to Sam by the same amount as Mario, and the odds of Luigi squeezing over him regardless were certainly not zero. Still, Sam specifically blew past expectations in part because of all that happened around him, and Wario just became more of a check on whether he'd keep going or not. It took THE big vocal campaign of the year to take him down in the end.

Keep in mind these characters aren't losing by vast margins a lot of the time. A few percent difference leaves enough room for circumstances per round to change the outcomes.

It's obviously not one-for-one, but it does leave groundwork to analyze how they might continue to remain strong in coming years. It's not that hard to pick apart weirder cases as well by that point compared to characters that might have more longevity. Wario has made Elite Eight multiple times, and his last two losses before last year were both to Eggman. Doomguy had a pretty rough year in 2023, but prior to that had been a finals gatekeeper for two years following his initial return. Even putting aside both still made round 4, I'd still say there's good reason to argue both are strong? Not surefire obviously, but still strong.

If Wario or Doomguy lost less ceremoniously in round 3, I wouldn't have reason to bring them up. Both made it back to the fourth round before losing to two of the eventual semi-finalists, with one still getting nearly 47% and the other only losing by a hair. They specifically came up as characters that anons felt might have balanced out the Elite Eight better whenever the results for that round first got revealed. Both still could have absolutely lost to Shadow, but it's tough to say how much was changed following the reveal of the year's Elite Eight.
