It's not even as though I was asking for high art here, I can even look past the "violence is futile" point because I accepted that was the subtext from the very beginning. I was just sold on this story as "an inherently amoral setting where selfishness and pure ego replaces the ideal of nirvana in Buddhism" and instead I got a cheesy friendship aesop, a cheesy "nihilism bad" aesop, Maya getting ugly bastard'd for a year to make some kind of point, and Allison only just getting her shit together after being sandbagged in a mostly offscreen lesbian relationship.

Actually, isn't it weird how people on /co/ were more excited to ship Allison and Cio BEFORE they officially hooked up? The chase really is more fulfilling than the target, sometimes. And that I think says more about Royalty than anything in the past year's worth of updates.

Something about the pace is just off and I wish he'd speed it up. The tournament arc was great with beard edits and a few really fun moments but man the pacing has gone to piss.

There's a lot of action and spreads, but at best pages are posted once a week, and Abby takes huge breaks so everything drags. It is what it is I guess. My dream would be if Abby went back to his old Wed-Fri schedule, but he's doing so many things rn and also has a family so no dice.
However I believe 100% he's committed in finishing this even if it takes him years.

The result of multiple creator breaks and the story itself. By the latter I mean until Jag and Metatron show up everything we see now is window dressing so it's hard to take this serious. 7 Vaganias and everyone who comes after until Incubus midfight is just another dumb mook to beat.

People loved Cio and Allison dating. Cio lighting a ciggy for her had people freaking out. It's just sad. Honestly I don't even mind Cio dying, other comics have killed off main characters and made it work. This one wasn't one of them. There is like, a trust your readers build up for you. You're right, but personally I never liked the pairing until Cio stopped pushed aside her wants to help Allison out in the tourney. After Yre and until then she was a wet blanket opposing the path which she knew Allison had to walk from the beginning. Also I think Cio's death was done very well; it segued to Jadis depression arc and Maya's backstory echoes the loss.

I feel like it happening before the Jadis and Maya arcs just makes it worse because those were the worst arcs in the whole comic. To be honest I haven't really been keeping up with the new pages - it just became way too lame.

I also really, really, really do not understand why you'd make your main characters so ugly. I thought if anyone would get it this author would but nope. He had like two sexy characters and can't even use them right.

If you something that subverts your expectations and is actually good with some soul read Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, it does everything this comic tried to do and better. Also the bad guy is actually interesting while being childish, just like Jags but a thousand times cooler.

White Chain makes a poor trans alligator because she is called a girl by everyone in the setting but is hiding from it herself. She has literally zero issues making people think she's a woman and in fact was bothered when people were calling her such. This is very, very stupid. Gotta remind everyone here that Abbadon started the webcomic with the thesis of trying to learn how to write woman characters. You can debate how well he's done but the basic truth is he's a guy trying to learn how to write woman and his subconscious can't help but fall back on guy type shit. Any trans vibes you get from the characters are because deep down all they are are woman characters written by a man, they all are guys deep down. Not saying this is true for all male authors, plenty have far better understanding and some simply don't try to write complex characters that really need that kind of understanding. Blame Abbadon's lack of understanding of woman for not writing better women.

"The true power is friendship" was there from day one, it's Zoss' whole shebang. If you didn't notice it before you're clueless.

But yeah the highlights of this comic were the cool setting and intricate set dressing. The former fell by the wayside for the sake of story resolution which was never Abby's strong suit and I don't think he has much time for the latter any more.

It's a very common problem that a writer can set up an interesting world and characters and foreshadowing and then when the time comes for any kind of resolution they completely choke.

I may be a bit clueless but I would argue it was only hinted at during the Mammon heist when he was disappointed with Allison, I would argue Zoss' shebang from day 1 was self-esteem. I concede there was always a heroic bent to the lesson imparted by the Conquering King, I just didn't expect it to end up being so...conventional, if that makes any sense.

Yeah. It's hard to explain but the way Gog has been resolved feels underwhelming even though it is technically a very impressive showing for everyone involved. The way it's so rushed, Nu-coke jumping in, how easily Gog falls in line. It all just kind of feels like Allison went over to pick up a powerup. Again, TECHNICALLY it's absolutely fantastic Allison is finally flexing some of that indomitable will but the concept is a lot more interesting than the execution.

I think Jag and 1 Metatron are the last truly interesting things in the webcomic for me, even though I'm pretty sure I've figured out how they'll deal with the former. Abby made a very good call to keep Metatron by far the most most mysterious of the antagonists. I'm glad that I'm still in the dark about what HIS deal is despite the tumblr dropping some pretty big hints about how badly he's getting punked in the finale.

So can we all agree that if Allison doesn't kill a whole bunch of people in the next page it's time to riot?

The only available way to improve the world is to help each other out, gang up on anyone who tries to fuck that up and then just... keep working on it, forever. I can accept that. What I'd hoped from KSBD though was to better show that "happy days are here again" doesn't instantly follow a commitment to equal representation, trusting each other, believing in your own justice etc. In the final analysis I think I am more unhappy with the execution than the concept. I wanted more of Allison struggling to rule before realising she should stop worrying and less relationship drama as well as aimless bumbling, I suppose.

The execution is bad, agreed. I originally really liked the Royalty stoicism/tao thing in which the ultimate power is not giving a shit: you burnt my house down and killed my dog?
