The anthropological definition for 'male' is an individual capable of production of small gametes (sperm).
Inversely, the anthropological definition for 'female' is an individual capable of production of large gametes (eggs).

Technically, who incubates the egg/embryo or how fertilization takes place doesn't matter, but what the individual contributes genetically DOES.

We know the mother grub is the one contributing the eggs (it's stated outright), that means all trolls, regardless of gender, produce 'sperm', which makes them definitionally male by anthropological terms (which are really the only terms one can use when evaluating a species sexual dimorphism, as it's the only definition that can be consistently applied to all species).

That said, this does NOT mean that there is no biological difference between masculine and feminine trolls (in the obvious respect, the feminine ones have boobs while the masculine ones do not, that is a biological difference).

There need not even be an incubator in some species, the male and female gametes can meet externally. Requiring an incubator is not a third sex, that would be sexual parisitism, which literally does not happen in nature with both sexes. I can easily imagine a system where the females excrete their egg cells which are then given to the mothergrub and have their nuclei extracted and used to fertilise the egg cells of the mother grub.
Note that it is hypothetically possible for the nucleus of one egg cell to fertilise another egg cells, albeit via artificial means in the case of humans.

Maybe trolls used to reproduce normally, kind of like how the ancestors of hove insects did, before evolving to have the “queen” system. The normal female trolls just took a different path from what worker bees did.

Most aspects of troll biology unique to them are retarded, and it’s also of course dumb from a hard-sci-fi perspective for aliens from a completely separate evolutionary tree to look almost identical to humans and share many pop culture aspects. It seems like a double standard to only start caring about verisimilitude now. Homestuck was never about hard sci-fi anyway, but on that topic it’s worth noting Alternia has had sci-fi tech for millennia so troll reproduction could easy be the result of genetic engineering.

I don’t think Hussie thought this hard about it though, and in fact I recall him mentioning in the commentary that it’s implied trolls vomit their genetic material into the buckets, so it may not even be that similar to sperm or egg cells to begin with.

Theoretically, they might just contribute genetic material in the form of cells, that the mother grub then somehow directly extracts the DNA from and inserts it into the egg cells before laying the eggs (we can already do this with technology today, scientists can extract DNA from skin cells and inject it into an egg cell and produce viable offspring, it's like our main method for cloning technology, so it's not IMPOSSIBLE for that to somehow occur naturally, though the chances of such a complex system evolving naturally are astronomically low due to how needlessly complicated it is, as you said though, Homestuck isn't even remotely hard sci-fi).

In other words, each troll provides DNA strands, which then combine externally AND THEN this combined structure is delivered to the mother grub and is used to fertilize the eggs.

The only way this is possible is if the eggs themselves contain almost no genetic material (in effect, the egg cells are 'dead' before fertilization) and the slurry actually contributes the genetic material of both egg AND sperm in normal reproduction (again, similar to how we do cloning, we take the DNA out of an egg cell so it contains nothing, then inject DNA extracted from a living cell into that egg and implant it back into the animal).

If it indeed combines before being implanted in the mothergrub, then it would have to be this. Two sperms can’t produce a zygote, and two egg cells could only do so with some third mechanism to put the nucleus from one into another (which i suppose could be specialised cells in the troll vomit, but that seems like the sort of thing that would occur inside the mother turn not outside.)

As for the question of why trolls have two sexes; from an in-universe perspective it would still make the most sense if they were vestigial traits, though whatever organs produce the genetic slurry would evidently be a mutation unrelated to their previous method of reproduction.

The meta explanation is that Hussie came up with the design first, and probably didn’t even think of the mothergrub until halfway through act 5 act 1 since Karkat early on asks Sollux if females find him repulsive, which would make no sense for a bisexual species to say.

Any character owned by a bigger and richer corporation can beat Lord English. A big company with lots of money and influence can actually use those resources to effect reality. They can stop Andrew Hussie from fucking with their characters legally while it is less likely they will be able to do the same. Andrew Hussie is still alive despite them drawing a comic of Lord English killing them. Characters like, say, Superman, are actually able to effect reality while Lord English is just some cringe OC who can only do things drawn by their creator.

It's like Suggsverse which totes its shitty OC's are so powerful they are realer than reality, which just backfires because despite being "realer than reality" cannot actually effect reality. Like, Anon can vandalize their wiki and harass and rape their creator to death and they can't actually do anything about it.
