Are you intended to do every X-Men comic ala Magister and his Spider-Man storytimes? I remember an anon trying this a long time ago (like at least a dozen years if not longer) but eventually stopping some time in the early '90s.

And if so, by chronological do you mean publication order or where comics would fit in the timeline? Because publication would be better IMO.

This is the 2nd time I've seen someone try to storytime the complete X-men, I think the last guy did get to the end. Same with Power Man & Iron Fist. Spiderman has been on and off, but it's now post-clone saga.

Beast is the smart guy but he's sort of a Generic Silver Age Smart Guy. He really doesn't become the Beast everyone knows in terms of personality (jovial, witty, eloquent and laidback) until Englehart starts writing him as an erudite stoner in Amazing Adventures and Avengers.

I am definitely doing this by publication, since I find it a bit too confusing trying too fit the comics in the appropriate timeline. I honestly recommend reading X-Men in publication order.

Wanda and Quicksilver were presumably because Stan just wanted some villains for the Cap's Kooky Quartet and they worked well enough since they were just kind of there, had the draw of being sibligs, Wanda was a pretty girl and Pietro had the abrasive personality.

Beast was simply because Marvel was starting to have success with horror comics and specifically Werewolf by Night so Roy wanted to do a "smart guy's experiements turn him into a monster" story and presumably chose Hank because he'd spent a long time writing the X-Men. The one issue of that run Conway wrote is pretty obviousy intended to be a horror style comic and Englehart kind of half-heartedly keeps it up before stopping.

Truthfully, I think that Silver Age X-Men gets overly hated on. I don't think the Stan/Jack stuff is that great but I like Thomas' first run better even if it's a bit generic Silver Age superhero. Once you get to Drake's short run and the introduction of Polaris and Havok, the quality skyrockets and the Thomas/Adams run is genuinely great, enjoyable Silver Age comics. It takes the Claremont run a bit to find its footing and it's not until Byrne comes on and IMO specifically around the time of Moses Magnum that it starts to become great.

Paul Reinman isn't held up as one of the greatest Kirby inkers like Joe Sinnott, but damn, that Cyclops is fantastic. Feels like the Genesis of the way Mike Allred and Steve Rude ape Kirby's style.

I will storytime Hank Amazing Adventures for sure since I find This anthology title featured the transformation of The Beast from plain old big-footed guy to his familiar blue-furred appearance rather essnational to X-Men history,

I wish the digital versions would include the letters pages because from what I've seen of transcriptions of them, they actually give a hint as to why Wanda and Pietro were picked for the Avengers: they were popular. The fans reading the book loved them and seemingly found them to be the most interesting part of the book and wanted to see them either join the X-Men or be spun off into their own features.

So in that respect, them joining the Avengers actually makes sense. The Kooky Quartet comic was Cap leading reformed villains and if the Maximoff siblings were popular then putting them in the book might help draw in fans to an otherwise radical roster shift. On the other hand, it's a missed opportunity because having them join the X-Men might have given a boost to that book and you now suddenly have two women on the team to compete for male (character and reader) attention and a hothead like Quicksilver to bounce off the more straightlaced characters.

Also here's a few examples of what I mean from a CBR thread for letters from X-Men #6 and #8.

yeah one thing people gloss over with the claremont era is that it has a ton of goofy silver age bullshit deep into its run, and that's ignoring the main cosmic shi'ar stuff that's weird enough by itself. The first bit of decent human mutant storytelling doesn't happen until days of future past and magneto doesn't get any good development until really God Loves Man Kills, 5 and 7 years into the run respectively.

Its weird I always forget Jack Freaking Kirby was the original X-Artist.

I think the only people I've seen homage his art in X-books have been Bruce Timm and Darwin Cooke.
