I’m gonna preface this by saying I’m not one of those anons that think a self insert is automatically bad all the time.
But, I gotta admit, if a creator is too up their own ass about self inserting as a character, it sometimes results in a story that caters to an extremely small niche, and other people in general can have a hard time relating to and sympathizing with that character and their story.
YOU can perfectly understand your own self insert’s perspective perfectly, because that literally is you. But your reader base might not. They might see that character and say “wow what a dumbass. I don’t care about this guy at all.” Because, they think you’re a dumbass and they don’t care about you or your non problems. And some authors take that reaction too personally and dismiss it and double down. When they should seek at least a little feedback and oversight on their outline or first draft and then rework it, before releasing a final product that’s set to fail.
None of the above necessarily applies to the short that is this subject of this thread, btw. The Variety article makes it sound like the project lead did workshop this concept through a whole team of people, made a number of changes to the initial idea along the way, and hopefully at least one of the people on the team would’ve stepped up and said something if the core pitch wasn’t clicking right.
