It sucked because Dana wanted more creative control than what she would reasonably or realistically would have had (especially considering how COVID fucked things over) while never really having a solid direction for the story and characters in the first place, nevermind her inability to properly work with the constraints Disney left her with or the fact that TOH was her first time scriptwriting and that the production team working on TOH was mostly fresh out of college.

And the only reason that Lumity is the sole thing that the show cares about is because Dana made it her number priority to secure a gay couple on-screen above having the means to be able to tell a good story. Which is ironic considering Dana never expected the fanbase to revolve around Lumity and that Dana isn't even really a romance fan either. Her push for Lumity is directly what led to the existing suits pushing back against her ideas for the story (which is what lead to S1 being delayed), something that got worse as newer management (that came in during S1's latter half of production, and then airing) wanted DTVA's animated series to be aimed more for younger children due to the post-Gravity Falls shows underperforming with the 6-11 crowd. And by the time S1 finally came out, the delays lead to the show being the most expensive DTVA show airing while fumbling in ratings (especially reruns) due to the lackluster story and Lumity scaring away Disney's main base of conservative families.
