It’s way easier to make something if you’re not constantly working on funding it. Anyone who has done a crowdfund can tell you that PR and plugging the fund is damn near a full time job. Then after the fund, creating and shipping stuff for reward tiers is nearly a full time job. Most indie projects I’ve seen need to hire someone just to deal with rewards/merch/marketing which eats into the budget. And then they find themselves needing to make more shit to sell to have money to continue producing the animation.
You can run super lean and do nearly everything yourself, but then it will take like 10 years to put out an episode.
If a studio picks it up, the financing is taken care of and infrastructure is in place. You can just focus on creating. It’s really not hard to understand why creators might want to go that route.

Contemporary production schedules are pretty fucked. There’s a reason why creators tend to take several years of hiatus after their show ends. Penn Ward even famously stepped down. I know anons have a hate boner for Hirsch, but I can’t blame him for burning out. Digital workflows made things faster, but instead of making life easier, they just increased expectation of how quickly things could be turned around.

Most of the freshman animators from that era either haven't had a follow up or basically rehashed their old concepts. JG Quintel did Regular Show part 2 (with humans). Rebecca Sugar did Steven Universe part 2. Braly did an Amphibia book. Pendleton Ward is probably the most prolific with Bravest Warriors and Midnight Gospel. Terrace has only recently put out the pilot for KoG. By the same token, Hirsch has released several books and comics related to GF, produced Inside Job, wrote on a bunch of projects, voiced for a bunch of projects, and was working on a follow up show until the animation division collapsed. Seems like a double standard to think that he's lazy, but other creators aren't.

A few are living off of commissions and patreon. It depends on the type of production. Monkey Wrench is mostly financed out of pocket and Zeurel does a huge amount of the work on his own. Sublo & Tangy Mustard is largely a one man operation. Loki IRL was created for 15k and funded out of pocket. Not everyone is seeking funding first, but Zeurel is killing himself making these episodes and Loki IRL took a decade to make. Funding allows you to assemble a team and actually pay people fairly to work on the project.

What are you talking about? Gaslight District was greenlit and it didn't do numbers even close to TADC. KoG hasn't been officially greenlit yet, but I happen to know that they've already begun work on the season. They tease that it isn't officially picked up yet to inspire people to buy more merch, but unless something REALLY fucked up happens, they'll get a run.
Unlike Nickelodeon, the shows don't need to generate profit for investors. Glitch is not publicly traded. The shows need to generate enough income through merch sales to sustain themselves and, like I said, they were already doing that with Murder Drones and Glitch's fan base is WAY bigger now than it was back then.

Glitch only runs shows for one season. Each show is a self contained story that runs for the original order of episodes. There's no worry about something getting canned midway through. If it's greenlit, the show will be created in its entirety. That's at least for in-house productions. "Glitch Presents" is a whole other thing.

In a roundabout way, that was kind of my point (although all of the mainstream gigs will generate *something* for him). The anon I was responding to said

This is how he does it. He's worked on a bunch of projects in various roles pretty steadily since GF wrapped.

A couple things:
When it comes to acting or writing or producing, he gets paid for those services up front. He's been working pretty steadily and getting paid for most of it. (Some of the non-union indie stuff like Bigtop Burger may have been done under rate or even pro bono...that's an unknown). The mainstream stuff will at least abide by union guidelines so there's a minimum he'll be making on each gig. Because Hirsch also has industry clout (and I'm assuming a decent manager to negotiate rates for him), he may be pulling a nice payday above union minimums. That's just to do the work - not royalties/residuals/etc. He was in 41 episodes of TOH. There are dedicated voice actors who would live off of doing that for the duration of the production.

When it comes to royatlies, anything that is on streaming or aired on television will get him royalty checks. Some of those will be substantial, some not so much. That's not the point. When it comes to passive income, having multiple streams is more important than having one giant winner. While the royalty checks from Gravity Falls wouldn't be enough to live off of, once you start adding all the checks from all the other stuff he's done, it can start looking pretty decent. Again, it's not early retirement money, but it's enough that he can be kind of choosy with the projects he decides to work on.

The creative industry is super small. Most gigs you get are going to be with people who you know and hang out with since they want to work with people they know share their creative vision and they can get along with. Regardless, he got paid to do the work no matter who hired him.

I feel llke most anons responding to the list of stuff he's done since GF ended are trying to reduce the amount of prestige of each job, but that's not the point. The list was created in answer to an allegation that GF royalties MUST be paying his bills because he hasn't done anything since then. The list of stuff he's done since then refutes that claim.

You're looking at each gig individually, but it's the collective whole that pays a freelancer's bills. He voice acted in 41 episodes of TOH and 10 episodes of Inside Job. Those are both shows that were on TV as well as streaming. SAG checks are fat. Add to that the SAG checks from all his other voice acting roles (including feature film gigs which pay out better).
Add to that his script writing and story consultation work.
Add to that his production work.
Add to that his book releases.

I think it's hard for non-freelancers to understand how the income of a gig worker actually works. The heavy gigs are awesome if/when you can get them, but those tend to be few and far between. It's the combination of several smaller things that will most often keep you afloat.

This is how indie stuff always goes. Once more well known artists push the scene to a higher profile, it helps put the spotlight on smaller creators. People come to see what all the fuss is about when they recognize a name or two, but end up exploring more if they like what they see.
Expanding the market so more people are paying attention results in more people willing to invest in smaller non-network productions which means more previously unknown creators will get more opportunities.
