You go back a few decades and it was extremely common for most popular broadway productions to almost immediately get some kind of film adaptation. That has become rarer and rarer and I'd say the Disney Renaissance might be to blame. The 70s could have a broadway adaptation of a semi-autobiographical book about a gay German man watching the rise of the Third Reich get a movie adaptation which becomes a mainstream hit and launches the career of a relatively unknown actress into Hollywood legend.
It took 3 decades for the biggest musical of the 80s written by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself to get a musical adaptation, not to mention Les Miserable which was also a mainstream hit outside of musical fans. This is partially because your average broadway is 4 hours but also because Disney basically locked the demographic over musical movies in the 90s.

The first episode takes place in Hell some time after the war. People are flocking to the hotel but only because they think the goal is to kill angels and that's what they want to do. Vaggie is trying to choose a new name for herself since Adam is the one who named her. Nifti is hailed as a hero for killing Adam, angel and his pig are going to therapy and he seems to be doing a lot better and happier than before. Hux is pretty much the same, and Alastair is watching everything unfold, purposefully not helping vaggie and Charlie with the hotel, and we see that he had to repair his cane which seems to be freaking him out a bit (not explicitly but that's what I think). Charlie is having a mental breakdown and grieving sir pentious because she doesn't know what happened to him and she thinks she killed him. Vox is trying to use all of this to scare the public, using the war to get people to listen to him because he wants to use the people of Hell to rise against heaven so that he can become like a god and take over heaven and we find out he used to run a cult when he was alive. And he's trying to get the other Vs to agree to the idea but they seem content with their current lives. Charlie winds up getting swarmed by media and Lucifer pops in to sweep her away because it's clear she's not handling things well. They talk about Lilith and how they miss her and Charlie tries to call her but it goes to voicemail. Then she goes and tells off everyone saying that the hotel is for redemption and being a better person only. We then get introduced to Baxter, a mad scientist who wants to study Charlie's idea of redemption and she compares him to sir pentious who was an inventor. Then at the very end we see Emily come out of a portal to tell Charlie that sir pentious is with them in Heaven and that her plan works and that's where the episode ends
