The majority of the South's political landscape was based on Jeffersonian ideology. The issue of abolition was troubling, but did not belie the South's other grievances towards the Republican party; namely federal protectionism, central banking, and internal projects (federal subsidies). These policies were the foundation of the Republican party that were designed to primarily benefit northern industrialists. The South, being mostly rural, benefited in no way from this system. People are quick to point out that slavery is mentioned in Southern secession acts, but don't mention how the aforementioned polices were explicitly prohibited in the CSA's constitution. That's why Southern secession was inevitable, and why, consequently, they needed an autonomous Charleston. Whether that escalated into war was entirely up to Lincoln.
Also, here's a cartoon because I remembered this is /co/ and not /his/
