This meme has gone the way of Peter Griffon not liking The Godfather.
At lest with "it insists upon itself", It's not presented like an objective fact as it is here. Not like it makes any sense in the first place since Smiling friends is still a very recent show, and this way of poking fun at it does not apply.

It's funnier now, Season 1 and 2 felt like they were trying too hard to be quirky at times, but now they're beginning to settle into themselves.

I find it's less about the show's quality and more about the let's play/podcast format creating a weird parasocial friendship with the creators, so of course you're gonna be especially supportive of it. That's not even getting into the inherent rightwing politics of the fanbase as a whole and seeing the show as "their team" in the endless culture wars they can't seem to resist getting involved in.

tl;dr, average show propped up by the built-in fanbase.
