I imagine the network was also squeamish about letting a teenager have any kind of relationship, because we had entered the "any relationship is the same as sexual intercourse" period of the insane world we currently live in, so a breakup was inevitable. But it could not have been handled worse, since they wrote it like a "finn overreacts and they aren't really broken up, in fact they weren't even really exclusive yet" until the last second.

You can argue that adam muto or whoever was responsible made the thing deeper and stuff, but I suspect that that was never Ward's intention; he probably mostly wanted to make a light hearted show about a boy and his dog going on adventures, saving princesses, doing fun stuff.

Granted, I've only seen a few episodes of Adventure Time's first season, but I enjoyed those episodes and the earlier vibe the show had back then. After hearing about Penn leaving and all the crap added to the show years later, I can't help but pissed off about what Muto and others did to this show. Luckily, I can easily skip those latter seasons regardless of how good some say those seasons were. I just want Adventure Time the way it was without all that unnecessary bullshit (lore, Bubbline, etc.).

I've always seen Finnceline as much more of a slow burn than the other ships. If the writers had just let them interact, handled the FP breakup in a less retarded way, their natural chemistry would've done most of the work of letting their bond grow over time. They'd be one of those couple who are the last ones to realize that they're a couple.
