Honestly, I like maybe 3 songs off each album.
It seems more like an excuse for Damon Albarn to have guest starts do most of the work. Which makes a lot of the songs hang on the "featuring" artist to make or break, and a lot of them break the track.

The art is cool. The music mostly sucks unless you're a basic bitch that likes pop ditties. I really wouldn't mind seeing Jamie Hewlett do an animated series based on the characters, but I wouldn't want to have to deal with the inevitable countless musical interludes.
In general, I hope Hewlett is able to do at least a film or series before he dies. His style is fucking cool, but he's gotten shafted so many times in his career at this point that it seems unlikely he'll get the opportunity.

I rarely actually feel anything for any of the tracks. Most of them "work" as a piece of music. Some of them have decent hooks which is what I think a lot of people like about it, but aside from occasionally making my head bob, the music feels really empty to me.

The multimedia aspect can be fun, but I think a lot of the music relies heavily on the visuals. I think if people see the video first they may think "that was cool", and then ride those fumes when they hear the song on its own, but as isolated pieces of music, they sound hollow to me.

i will never bring up my taste in music irl because people get so serious and deep about it and i just like when thing sounds good to my ear holes. i guess i am simply low iq.

That was openly the whole point; the fictional cartoon band is a "mask" for established artists to work behind without bothering about branding and their existing audiences etc.

Phase 1 was my favorite art style with the thick black outlines.

2 was where I first came in and I loved that gritty dark look too - and the Robert Valley music videos made it look really cool.

3 was similar to 2 but more colorful, and also introduced 3D models which I wasn't crazy about but I did laugh at Murdoc's dressing room shenanigans.

4 had the Gorillaz heads pasted on to real people's bodies, which was kinda weird. I felt like maybe they didn't take that as far as they could have. Also suspected that this is where Jamie started to outsource to his son and other artists.

5 and on, it's all similar to phase 2 but I'm not vibing with it anymore. Maybe I just outgrew it, that happens.

at the start of phase 2 most normies had not heard of the band. the project was still trying to prove itself. it ended up being a smash hit with regular top 40 airplay, and you had much bigger artists begging to be included in the next album
so when you're pulling in people like snoop or elton john, you dont really have to try so hard anymore, you already made it
