Like that's basically how I imagine the whole thing went down.
I know it's considered a bit of too kind of an interpretation, but based on my own research Hussie seems more grossly incompetent rather than malicious and most of the controversies and fuck ups come from him having no fucking idea how to manage anything.

To be fair, Hiveswap is objectively NOT a kickstarter scam.
The game IS coming out and the game coming out was always the intent.

A scam implies that it was never meant to come out as a real game at all.
Hiveswap isn't a scam, it's just a grossly mismanaged failure as a project (and a perfect example of why when making a game via Kickstarter, you need to have a full game-design document prepared right from the start, as the whole reason things went south with Odd Gentlemen was that Hussie hadn't made the game-design document because he was being lazy and assuming other people would take care of it and pick up his slack like he always does, but this time no one did).

He's gone way too far up his own ass due to the success of Homestuck to ever really learn at this point.

It reflects in his art as much as it does in his management decisions too. The guy's art hasn't improved AT ALL since the end of HS.
Hell, even the improvements he managed while making HS mostly happened over the first couple of years.

It's like he hit a certain point in 2011 where he thought "this is as good as I'll ever need to be" and disappeared so far up his own ass that the concept of learning, improving or listening to other people's opinions became completely alien to him.
