My issue with Carnage is he just mismatched as a villain. His power levels and effects fit a Spider-man villain but his personality isn't anything that compliment Spidey. Most of Spiey's rouge gallery is down on luck villains, and/or one's personally tied to him. Carnage hits none of those, he just likes to kill cause he's crazy, even when they retro fitted he had mommy/daddy issues it didn't really do much to make him work any better as a Spidey foe. I think he work well as a Wolverine villain due to snik bub having a closer understanding of how easy it be just to go feral and kill for fun, but I'm unsure if Carnage's power set and style would translate over.

I like carnage because he is such an edgelord character and i think its good for spider man to have a unique character where there is no motive other then a desire to kill or have no tragic back story to try and make them sympathetic. Carnages lack of sympathy is why i adore him in a way besides just looking cool as fuck

anon >>150991224 hits some of it with how much of it is all in the family with him such as GG being his best friends dad, Lizard was his teacher, but it's also how thematic it stayed with many his enemies being animals too like Rhino, Doc Ock, and Vulture.
The big thing however was most the enemies stayed within his power level of being street threats, this is a big advantage Spider-man and Bat-man have is where they are street rime heroes first and foremost it's hard for their rouge gallery to be grand world ending threats so the writers have to get much more creative with villains motives and why they are acting as they are. Thus they hold in people's minds more because a story about the hero struggling over he fact he has to fight a mentally ill friend and balance between saving them and saving others sticks better than you have to stop the cosmic baddie wanting to take over earth.

>Spiderman needs someone like that
Again, I argue he had several like that, who development much more interestingly. Carnage is not unique in his behavior, it's just boring, outside of how he looks, which is what holds him up. He's basically Vermin, right down to the same mommy/daddy issues, it's just a giant rat monster that kills and eats people for fun doesn't look as cool as Venom but if he was made of blood, it's likely the only reason Carnage out lived the at least four other attempts of making Spiderman have an edge villain that just likes killing, kids look at Carnage and went "coool"

I think Otto is Peter's best villain, but Norman is explicitly the top dog and a force of nature. It actually makes Otto better that he has/had to deal with the Goblin fucking up everything, and seethe over the fact that: while he might be smarter than Norman, the gap isn't wide enough for it to actually matter, and he's so much more successful in so many other ways, specifically fields that Otto has failed in as well

I like Norman more, but that is exactly why I appreciated their interaction in YFNSM. Otto may be smarter, but that doesn't mean much when Norman's success reaches across so many fields and endures far longer. Otto lives in a world shaped by Norman, and even though they rarely meet directly, that influence builds a bitterness that adds depth to their conflict. The battle is defined by legacy, and like him or hate him, in ASM, Norman's legacy is inarguably the one that stands above the rest.

I’m watching the new Iron Man book with cautious optimism because Norman’s involved, and that (should) mean Tony’s going to act up. Their petty back-and-forth was hilarious, and I’m tired of getting on the occasional Oscorp Easter egg or Tony’s occasional smug little comments about how his company is the better investment. He claims Oscorp passed his once, and he’s not too mature to brag his is considered seen as the gold standard. It’s not hard to beat a company run by a goblin-themed terrorist, but Tony treats it like a personal victory when Norman's involved. I don’t care if Norman’s on a redemption arc. I need the writer to let them stay petty. Let them bicker. Let them compete. Let them be ridiculous.

Isn't it more like, "what if Vermin wasn't scared?" I dunno that's compelling to me in the sense that Carnage is ongoing unlike Vermin and Sin-Eater and also doesn't have any connection to obsessing about Spider-Man. He simply targets anyone except Venom which is special to him. Makes him unpredictable, powerful, and more of a force than character. It's just Carnage also has flavor/personality by being an even more twisted version of Spider-Man who cracks wise while gutting people. Venom did that but Carnage is more overly delighted. That helps in a moment to moment way but Carnage is moreso just a major threat Spider-Man has to be more cautious and decisive about, at the same time. It's another way to push him to the limit and Spidey can't just capitalize on relationships, psychology, or some other more typical answer to stopping a villain. Spidey has to simply be more ruthless, diligent, and tenacious to get past. That's why Carnage should be used more sparingly and they kinda have...for a while.

Carnage doesn't just kill for fun. It's about taking delight in not just the death of a person but to sew madness into everyday life. Burning buildings, shrieks of terror, anarchy and disarray taken to the most destructive of levels. Which is a fine foil to Spider-Man because chaos is the last thing he wants to worry about in his life

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this story. First of all, it hinges on another story where Norman did something completely out of character. There is no way that karen, who is somehow both neglectful and a possessive helicopter parent, would ever sacrifice Harry. Memory loss or not, Norman treats Harold Theopolis Osborn like his personal brand. Not even Harry gets a say. He cares more about legacy than his entire company and he’s arrogant enough to believe he could make money some other way if he had to. That part makes no sense. On the other hand, I hate that Mephisto is involved again, but Norman tossing some poor employee to the knife and getting cozy with demonic nonsense is exactly the kind of crap he lives for. He eats that up. So yes, it’s weird shit, but it’s his kind of weird shit.

I enjoyed that Norman was clearly torn, and the writer and artist did a fabulous job showing that tension. He’s conflicted, yet fully committed to the path he’s chosen. The flashbacks of Emily holding baby Harry were almost haunting. They remind readers that Norman once had love in his life, that he wasn’t always this fucked up. Which makes what follows even more twisted. He seriously thought about blowing a hole through a wall just to reach an employee who never wronged him and kill him in front of bro's wife and kids and the worst part is he nearly went through with it. One toss and an innocent mother and her two babies would’ve been scarred forever. He barely stopped himself, and that’s terrifying.

Fantastic fours have many cool villains. The problem is that in their story the major focus is the adventure.
In Spiderman the setting is always New York so the writer's focus is in the enemy of the week.
In FF the setting change every story in a Doctor Who style from New York, space, alien planets, negative zone, different timelines etc so cooler villains are mixed with other that simply exists to fill the wacky plot of the issue.
In other cases, the villains are meh because the issue's purpose is introduce characters that will be new heroes in other comics. See the Inhumans, Black Panther or Adam Warlock (HIM).

People love to throw out spicy takes about Norman Osborn. Doesn't stop them from being wrong. Sure, maybe he doesn’t work for everyone and it’s fair to say he's done and said things that make him a polarizing figure. However, writing him off as a lackluster villain just doesn't hold up. At the very least, he's a solid antagonist.

In the Torn #1 storytime, I said I wanted Evangeline to be secretly working for Norman to retrieve an evil book. With Norman showing up in issue #5, it looks like that twist might be closer to coming together. Boys don’t want girlfriends. They want evil tomes that turn girls into monsters.
