Huntress Wizard comes from a family that are OOO's equivalent of Mormons, insignificant forest folk who looked down upon magic, until a group of "bad kids" who were into that sort of shit got her involved in their group. After a while, Huntress was dropped by her crew for shitty reasons, and found his master/boyfriend who helped her truly master magic. The aspects that make her sad and a bit mad (like every other wizard) are that she fears being irrelevant like her family and being a pushover who just does what others tell her, which is what she did for half of her life. After being abandoned by her master/boyfriend, she decided to be a loner, to avoid having to be abandoned or dictated by anyone. That's why she's so loose with everything, including her relationship with Finn, because she thinks it's better to be by yourself rather than being hurt.
It will parallel Fionna's opposite arc of being too desperate to keep her friends and reputation as a hero intact that she does bad things. Fionna can't imagine being by herself without her loved ones, while Huntress can't imagine being part of a group of friends, family, or a stable relationship with someone. Both learn to be in the middle, Fionna becomes more independent, and Huntress lays down her barriers.

So I finally watched the first episode. How is it possible that they could spend 24 minutes doing so little? The original series had half the runtime, yet at its peak churned out tight, creative stories in the space between commercial breaks. This show feels so... flabby

I was actually pretty impressed by the pacing. Established the new status quo for Fionna's world, set up the conflict with Queenie, incoming relationship drama with DJ/Hunter, Cake and M-Cron. We saw where Simon is at, living with marcy, working at Wizarts - it set up the stakes with Finn dying, HW on a rescue mission to save him... Quite a bit was covered really, without feeling rushed. The transitions between the scenes - with Simon calling Fionna, then dropping the orange off at the grave, which was picked up by the lion which HW is chasing, was smoothly done.

I wish we could've gotten a HW story without Fionna since I'm way more interested in HW. Simon made more sense to hang with Fionna and Cake since he had a connection to them via being Ice King. The only connection HW has with them is that Fionna is a different version of Finn who she already has experience with. You could tell a similar story with HW without the multiverse stuff and have it work well by itself. Fionna's current character doesn't have much room to grow, she already had a completed arc in season 1. The only thing she seems to have going for her is that love triangle between Hunter and DJ Flame. I just don't have much interest in Fionna anymore which was my biggest fear coming into this season. I wasn't sure where they could go since season 1 ended so conclusively and it doesn't look like they have many answers.

Yeah I know and it's sadly how TV works. This entire show seems like an excuse to focus on characters that couldn't get the spotlight any other way. In season 1 it was Simon and in Season 2 it's HW. I just wish they ended last season differently to give Fionna way more of a through line for this one. But I know they ended things how they did because they probably weren't sure if they were getting a 2nd season. 100% agree. I would have preferred if Wizard City was about HW instead of Peppermint Butler. He became a different character and we had to get introduced to him all over again. If the writers still wanted to include him, they could've teamed up with HW that would have worked better than HW and Fionna.

I really like Burch as HW, she fits the character. Overall this episode was pretty nice and the music was really nice, but the pacing for this season feels like its already in shambles. We're at the end of episode 2 and the proper plot has not even started yet. Season 1 despite having to do much more introductions, felt like it was paced a lot better and got us into the action quicker.

They should have structured it to where this point we are at right now should have been the end of episode 1, at least.

I think from the visuals and how vast and fucked up the weird transition world HW ended up with, we can pretty confidently say the heart of the forest was actually the primordial creature that is responsible for all plant stuff in the multiverse AT is in. Probably has some connection to the life giving snake lady too. I imagine that when HW took the sap, it probably caused a rupture in its powers and state. Think of it like HW causing a black hole/worm hole in all plantlife, one that she got pulled through.

I really liked the design of the elk creature thing, very cool.

I think it wasn't chained to the ground, but a large iron ball heavy enough to keep it from moving away. Time passed, it slept, nature spring up around it and the ground level rose, and these weirdos or their predecessors started worshipping it. Hell, they may have been the ones to trap it there. You would think if they really had it's best interest at heart that they would've let it free.

I have a fondness for her old voice because of sentimentality, but when I think about it I remember that I've also always sort of thought it was a weird VA selection, that she sounded strange and unlike herself otherwise. An animation project, like very media project, is esentially a conglomerate of people that all need to feel like they're showcasing their work properly in the project and the overall goal is for the project to be succesful enough popularity/money wise for the investors, money people, etc. and to be succesful enough art and critique wise so the people who worked on it feel validated and you can keep relying on them for future projects. This is why even the most money grab media still has some effort and artistic intent put into it.

Due to this need to satisfy both goals, pacing is usually left only as the third very short pillar standing in the project. You need to make your artists feel validated so cutting scenes back and throwing out ideas is not a viable thing to do constantly for the sake of better pacing. Usually really good pacing and good writing happens in projects where those artists that need to be validated are mostly writers. This is why prime time TV shows usually don't suffer from bad writing, since most of the big name important people that work on those are the writers and directors.

Adventure Time has always had a very artist heavy production crew and now that much heavy writing. Due to this and the 22min format, the result is that having the cool scenes the artists wanted to do takes priority over the whole thing having consistent pacing and writing.

I kinda hope they explain a bit more on why HW fears growing soft so much. She said it’s what drew her to the world of wizarding but going by her backstory, it looks like she’s always had that solitary nature since she was just a kid. Like why would she think she would cease to matter in the world if she lets someone in? She never seemed like someone who cared about that sort of thing. It puts her relationship with Finn in some weird limbo status which I hope gets addressed this season. She’s trying to save him and I hope they show that her determination to save Finn is her “softness” for him and that it’s a good thing because it gives her strength. I really hope she realizes that her not wanting to grow soft is something that’s changed.
