I felt sympathetic for their circumstances, and I saw they worked hard, but that's it

None of those make them irredeemable, especially since it's just the pilot, but I'd like a few more positive traits to know them by

We don't know that. We do know, from his POV, that he was looking out for them, and in the pilot he is the only character who doesn't act behind anyone's backs. If the narrative agrees with you, they could have done more work
