Monty Oum was never a good animator and I don't know why anyone likes his work or work copying him. It was novel when it was stick figures being posed in flash but his "animation" had no weight or momentum to it whatsoever, it always looked like a child smashing two action figures together.

I initially thought that Cinder was a cute girl whose shtick is that he's pretending to be some kind of evil mastermind, while her friends are humoring her.
Her genuinely being supposed to be a villain was bonkers. It didn't fit the vibes that they built at all. In hindsight, they were marking her as a villain, but it was so badly done that I parsed it as parody.
But then, the vibes were mostly "Western artist clique pushes Reddit-style humor on top of Monty's work". There was no coherent plot direction, only off-key uncanney valley anime-like attempts at humor interspersed with a skeleton framework of ideas that Monty probably wrote up on a napkin on the expectation that they would be fleshed out.

He was decently good at pacing the fights to give them a story arc where combatants wax and wane and adding variety to the scenarios. The entire point of transforming weapons in RWBY is for them to be used for visually appealing maneuvers, like Ruby using her scythes gun to propel herself with its knockback.
Also, crossover fanfiction animation was a mind-blowing idea at the time, which added additional draw.
Plus, I wouldn't call it weightless. He might have pioneered it, but his style goes beyond cutting setup frames from attacks. He was clearly Platinum/Kamiya-pilled, though, which likely affected his style.

Caboose should have been in RWBY.

OC has clashed with Cinder during assignments outside the walls, and one night, exhausted from their respective assignments, have a tryst at an Inn. She gets knocked up, they go AWOL to Vacuo. Next, like, 3 years I've already written out. Full blown redemption story.

Using shitty software that wasn't meant to do the things he wanted it to do, fucking over the other animators who had real experience with actual animation software. Dillon Gu used Blender before he was forced to use Poser. The dumbass didn't even know what nude models were, and got pissed at a fan for suggesting it and accused him of just wanting porn. Because of him, they had to make new models every time the characters had different outfits, wasting resources. And that was the case until later in the show's run. Work smarter, not harder.

At a time when it was unusual for someone to be a hobbyist 3d animator, he stood out for that alone. There weren't many other people doing what he did. I was there in the old days when Volume 1 was airing, back when we were making fun of the "Can you match my resolve?" stuff and all the other dumb shit he'd say. Early RWBY was viciously mocked here and deservedly so. Monty constantly talked big game, but everything that wasn't fighting or autistic dancing was comically amateur. Fucking egregious animation errors left and right and the voice work was just them grabbing girls from the office and it wasn't even subtle. It's undeniable that Monty has been heavily lionized since his death. And you know what? I can't blame anyone for it because the chucklefucks that were left to pick up the pieces managed to defile and suffocate that tiny bit of soul that Monty had imparted. It's legitimately tragic that it's only in the defilement of that soul that it becomes fully apparent.
That said, if Monty was still alive (assuming he wouldn't end up going trans at some point, because let's be honest, he was a prime demographic for it), he'd still be saying dumb shit and talking big game and he wouldn't be nearly as sympathetic as he is in death.

Dust (A Worm/RWBY fusionish) has been really good so far. It's a genuinely good fusion between the two settings and the Worm characters are melded in shockingly well. Like Taylor feels like she fits right in when in another fic like say TWNY (which is shit) she doesn't really fit in and certainly doesn't *feel* like Taylor.
