The joke is they were to lazy to make it look steam punk or medieval fantasy and call it a mantis mover or something

The forklift is drawn to be as out-of-place as possible so that the reader will find the new technology as jarring as the characters do.

Seeing a forklift in the Avatar world doesn't feel wrong to me on its own, making that forklift look like one I'd see while shopping at my warehouse club does.
