This is technically cheating but I kinda came up with my own Mystery Kids idea with Over the Garden Wall recently. Basic idea is that, like the comic, the kids start to have shared dreams of entering The Unknown. It would end up kinda becoming a meeting spot every night. Plots flip flopping from adventures in The Unknown to supernatural shenanigans in the living world. We know already things can cross over with how the bell is still inside Jason Funderberger at the end of the show. Perhaps to further expand on without full explaining what The Unknown really is, there could be things like cryptids & other super natural beings in our world they'd have to send back or find a way make a purpose for. Like if the giant turkeys leaked into our world & started running amuck. Or maybe like how there's the fringe theory bigfoot can use portals to travel between dimensions. Stuff like that. Artifacts of power like the bell would for sure have to be things they'd contain in a hideout in the real world. Beatrice in particular would act as their mediator in The Unknown as well as the one who collects research material or information from other residents. While Wirt would handle researching folklore at the library during the day. Like learning methods to trap or ward off evil spirits & monsters.
