You have it of course, exactly backwards: classical enlightenment, and in many places not just Eastern thought, was keen on the idea that more Enlightenment brought less understanding as one became more aware of the limits of traditions perception and existence. To truly no know nothing was to beyond the experience of most people, who could not even grasp the limits of their experiences.
Within the paradigm here, we have what we've seen before (Black - no restraint, Red - restraint, Green - directed action, Gold - true understanding) and with the idea of Enlightenment being "understanding nothing," the idea is probably coming to terms with the rigid parameters of the previous "levels" being wrong. Their "understanding" of things is wrong.
