This dialogue is calling upon cultural tropes we associate with the afterlife, but canonically she's leaving to get erased.

Considering that the court casually kills or does worse than death to people so casually "for the needs of many", I wonder what they have in reserve for when they have someone who would warrant actual execution, especially when it is murder carried through supernatural and scientifically unproven methods.
Eglamore is going to get his old master's books and teach Georgie how to hang, draw and quarter to the court's standards.
Where are the black people who supposedly keep a watching eye so we don't have a situation equivalent to a rogue wizard roofying up students in Hogwarts?

Like for Kat, Mort (for some reason at least in flashbacks) and most of new people (presumably), the ether looks like either plain or goofy, with the exception of the bug psychopomp for some reason.
I think Tom simply didn't established that back then or forgot that detail for a quick gag.

It doesn't even have a thing to do with "waifu" shit. Omega was an interesting character and there were so many possible avenues to explore with her history and what, if anything, remained of her abilities, and even if not the fact that she was a new person living entity inside a magical space while still related in some way to the technosphere and presumably there's still the remainder of her "machine" somewhere and- NOPE, it's over, done, forgotten in two pages, swept under the rug now just forget she ever existed. Ha ha off to the ether woopsie! Fuck this garbage.

Even IF something like this were a reasonably story development to happen, the pacing in this is always just a complete mess. It's page after page, chapter after chapter of nothing, then WOOSH "something happens" and it's too much too soon with no time to narratively settle in and then it's over and gone and on to the next year of agonizingly dull nonsense. FUCK I am literally mad at how bad a writer Tom is.

At the very least the ending of the dual Annies arc could have been done with at least a bare minimum amount of story arc conclusion. He could have kept it going for as long as was fitting to draw out some kind of satisfying climax to a genuine conflict that benefited from their unique circumstances. Instead, no, it JUST. FUCKING. ENDED.

How is he so aggressively, actively BAD at this? He's not terrible at STARTING any of these plot threads or devices. He's not bad at character design, he's not bad at communicating a personality, he's not too shabby at world building even if there are a lot of gaps it would be nice to fill in, I'll even be so generous as to say he's not bad at setting up tension but he JUST CAN'T SEAL THE FUCKING DEAL and come up with any sort of genuine dramatic conflict, trial, and resolution. What he resolves every storyline with is not bad, is not even mediocre, it is literal anti-storytelling. I cannot fathom anyone ever possibly doing that this badly, and this consistently, by accident.

This is kinda a far cry from the way death was portrayed earlier in the comic, as a sort of respite.

The Ether was creepy here. It didn't even give Omega time to reconcile with her death. The Ether started eating at Omega nearly instantly and manipulated her memories like some HYPNOFAG snake vore monster so she would willingly feed herself to it.

What the heckies are you talking about? The court tried to kill Coyote not that long ago. Jenny and her group have clearly killed before. Eggs was prepared to kill on many occasions. Jones even seems like an implicit threat to the Foley kids.

There is no way they were going to let Omega live after their space trip, Zimmy too.

I don't think Gunnerkrigg Court is some grimdark le secret evil place, but they clearly don't care if some people live or die. And they are clearly willing to kill if its in their best interest.

In a world with direct access to magic and direct access to the gods no one would be trying to fundamentaly get rid of it. How many irl governments are trying to get rid of electrons? Your not getting it the Court has did studied and tried to get magic to work. It not possible the Ether is based upon illusion IE if you understand it, its not Ether based. Nobody can replicate or understand or utilize Ether based stuff, it a fundementally locked system that requires inequality.

Sure it great if your on the top able to warp reality to your whim, but what about 99.9999999999999999999999% of everybody else do you think they like the thought that their continued existence, and life exists only at your whim to allow it to continue existing. What happen the masses when the people on top decide they should stop existing, well they all die.

The idea of equity which is what the court was founded upon, is fundamentally impossible alongside something like the Ether.

I kinda hope they do succeed in going to that ether-free universe, just to see what happens the moment somebody dies. Are they going to be stuck as ghosts forever, or go straight into oblivion, or even jumpstart a whole new ether that ruins the whole point of their trip?

I unironically think the poor reception to the Norns chapter broke something in Tom. He talked about how excited he was to finally post a chapter he'd been planning since the beginning of the comic, and the almost universal reaction was that it was quite possibly the worst chapter in the entire comic. Ever since then the comic's not felt quite the same and we keep having newly-introduced and liked characters getting killed.

Reminds me of how Tom spent years setting up the whole "Tony isn't actually evil" bit, and the fandom flat out rejected it. It just doesn't pay for him to take chances.

The story went to shit when MUH ETHER-FREE WORLD was the reveal. Things were so much more interesting when there were dramatis personae doing suspicious things all over the court during its long history. Remember that Steadman fellow? The headmaster? All of these things became non-entities. It's bizarre how much just evaporated from the story. Like one little offhand comment about what the court's true master plan they were working on offscreen and it's the excuse to never show any character's face ever again. Annie and pals are just running around like it's recess and all the teachers went home. Surely she and Kat are not the only ones there with parents. There's no mystery or threat from anyone with specific motivations or goals other than whatever Coyote's stupid nonsense in that has long since ceased to be interesting. We're inside an "etheric distortion" that barely feels like one, if anything it just makes the court as a location that much less interesting and unique. We went from baldie dying to a spider to everyone just kind of hanging out doing their own thing in their various clubhouses like it's Saved by the Bell or Degrassi. Except without any of the actual teen drama/interactions to go along with it. It feels like the story itself just forgets they're supposed to be inside the distortion most of the time so there's no visible effect on anything. There was something about Annie punting a Coyote-gopher into the stratosphere in a virtual desert of the mind, now people just kinda walk around the "campus" or whatever like it's no big deal. I hate this all so much. What's wrong with him?

There was a long running mystery of the mechanical birds and he set up a potential conflict that could happen in the future. In the very next chapter, he completely deflated it.

He set up the gods as being retroactive existences. As on coyote was only born once enough myths about him existed, but he retroactively became the one that put the stars in the sky because the myths say he did. Jones says the stars were ALWAYS in the sky since she appeared.
So before the norns arx we all assumed the tiktoks were a retroactive change to the unverse caused by kat becoming robogod.
But then tom went "nah, regular time travel"

idk, this was kind of a great moment to me. this was more the payoff of months of Kat being crazy after finding out about all Annies being shifted from the Arbiter.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if the very first Kat to ever exist was the one that broke time and got a visit from the Norns, and perhaps working together they figured out that saving this one girl Annie would fix everything

The actual worst thing about this reasoning is that it's basically hard confirmation that Tom had originally intended for them to be a permanent addition, even if his excuse is bullshit. We were deprived of a world where the two Annies were permanent.

He literally said they didn't fit the ending. That's not "making up a reason" that was his own stated words in the livestream. Whatever the reason is that he got rid of them, it's hard confirmation that they were intended to stick around, because otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned that the reason he got rid of them was because they didn't fit the ending. Get better reading comprehension.
