Worst Comics Thread
What is the worst comic you have ever read? It can be for any reason, whether it irreparably damaged characters, the universe itself, or the writing or art was simply so poorly written it felt like a complete waste of time.

For me personally, it was Marville. There are many contenders: The Unfunnies, JLA: Act of God, Superman: At Earth's End, TDKSA and Crossed: Psychopath but in the end Marville literally had no redeeming qualities.

emerald twilight, for removing Hal as GL and the GLC for 10 years, especially given the GL run at the time, while not selling particularly well, had Hal, Guy and John in appropriate niches (Hal leading JL Europe and recruiting for the GLC, John managing the patchwork planet, Guy using Sinestro's ring and working in space)
I really liked Kreon, Boodikka and Jack T. Chance as well

It is very difficult to top Marville. Almost everything else I’ve read and hated I’ve at least been able to enjoy hating because it’s laughably bad, but Marville is just (and may Allah forgive me for using this term) fucking cringe. I can’t think of any other way to describe it. Reading it is like listening to a drunk at a party who thinks everything he says is clever and hilarious but he’s just a tedious unfunny bore.

I unironically love Marville, and have every issue. The early issues have some snappy British humor-tier jokes, and I like the spirituality it takes on in the later issues when they meet God and go back in time to watch humanity evolve.

I've started reading a couple Minecraft comics that were so bad I couldn't make it more than a few pages in. Here's one of them.

I haven't read this comic but I can already tell it's ultragay for trying to replace Punisher's super iconic skull symbol.

Marvel got weird about it because military and police liked using it and Marvel felt awkward that the "wrong" type of people started liking Punisher.

It's worse than that he has his wife come back from the dead, taking all his shit and give him a speech about why he sucks before killing him and he gets dragged to Weirdworld. On top of that he made child Frank some permascowling fat edgelord instead of having a normal childhood like Ennis said he had.

>instead of having a normal childhood like Ennis said he had
It wasn't written by Ennis but Punisher MAX as a child was already ready and willing to kill a young guy who was essentially raping women around the neighborhood. But before he can do it he witnesses the guy get set on fire by some other guy who was a Marine.

So even before his time in Vietnam or the death of his wife/children he already had that inner spark of him as a kid of wanting to be a predator that went around killing the bad guys. And it's probably not a coincidence he specifically became a Marine after being influenced by that Marine he saw kill somebody else.

And who’s the right type of people? If you are into Punisher comics, you may be into action films/shows. Hell, even in the 80’s they were going for the Soldier of Fortune crowd. I don’t see a lot of overlap with people that read Punisher, and watch Steve Universe.

Ennis wrote it. It was a collection called Past, Present, Future. The girl he liked that was raped is the Marine’s sister. The rapist was the son of the local crime boss.

Yeah he was but Ennis stated that outside of that he saw Frank being an ordinary child and not deeply mentally disturbed. Frank wanted to kill the guy because he raped one of his friends but it's not like Frank was deeply violent and disturbed and looking for an excuse.

One of the problems with Punisher is that Marvel tends to appeal to woke politics nowadays so when a mass shooting happens and gun control becomes the topic of the day it becomes awkward to publish Punisher since he's just a normal guy that goes around shooting people. And on top of that often wears a black jacket which makes him look even more like a stereotypical mass shooter.

Look at that character from Bridge Kids or that Hatred video game. A guy with a gun in a black jacket screams "mass shooter". Compare that to Deadpool who also shoots people with guns but is so over the top nobody would mistake him for anything approaching reality.

I haven't read a whole lot of bad comics. I don't check out things that have awful reputations unless I have a very good reason to believe that I would like it.
The worst comics I can remember reading are probably:
>Joker's Last Laugh
>Superman: True Brit
>Ultimatum
>Cerebus (the bad parts)
And of those, I think only Ultimatum is truly bad. Cerebus is really bad at parts but enough of the comic is good that the work as a whole gets a pass.

There's the Spider-Man Trouble comic. Essentially Marvel wanted to start appealing to female readers so their big brain idea was to make a comic about Aunt May where it turns out she's a huge whore, gets pregnant with Peter by cheating on Uncle Ben, and then lies to Uncle Ben about the kid being his which instantly backfires because Uncle Ben was mere moments away to telling her he was infertile.

Pic-related isn't Mary Jane. It's a young Aunt May whoring around in some summer camp. It was written by Mark Miller because of course it was. They wanted to incorporate it into official canon but since everyone fucking hated it Marvel kind of just pretends it doesn't exist.

Keep in mind if Aunt May is secretly Peter Parker's true mom this has massive ramifications for the lore if true.

I mean, the thing about Trouble is that it didn't affect anything. It's not Civil War or OMD, where it throws everything after it off, or like Sins Past or Avengers 200, where another writer has to go back and address it. It got referenced in Ultimate Avengers 3 and that's about it. You can bring up Aunt May and Uncle Ben and this is nowhere near what comes to mind first. It's not a good book, but it stayed within its covers, and I am at least willing to give it credit for that.

You really shouldn't because as pointed out here >>151153074 the original plans weren't to stay "within its covers". They wanted it to be canon and the only reason it's not is because everyone ended up hating it.

It's not the result of the creators having some artistic dignity in not screwing up Spider-Man canon it's just because everyone called the comic shit so it was just easier to ignore it's existence.

Almost none of the people putting Punisher skulls on their cars read comics or even watched his TV show, the Punisher they idolize has nothing to do with the real Frank Castle. Marvel disassociating themselves from this is arguably the only sane politics-adjacent decision they've made in a long time.

if anything it reinforces the themes of the X-Men books, that it doesn't matter what your genetic code is or what others say about you, you are what you decide to be, with Kurt being incredibly devoted despite being half demon, it shows how strong he is thanks to the power of faith and his own willpower.

Actually that reminded me, I did read all of JMS' run on Spider-Man and Sins Past was really REALLY bad.
I actually don't mind OMD too much. It's a shitty editorial mandate but I think it was done about as well as it could have been done. The premise is extraordinarily stupid but I like the BND era a lot and some of the moment-to-moment storytelling in OMD is decent. I liked the whole thing with Peter's unborn daughter being the ghost/demon that fucks with him. Reminded me a lot of Carey's run on Hellblazer. The big problem is how retarded and out of character 'Peter sells his marriage to the devil' is but I was able to ignore that in a way that I wasn't able to ignore Sins Past.

>Character is called Escapade, they are trans.
>Their powers ARE NEVER PROPERLY EXPLAINED.
>They can swap with people, but sort of a reality warping swap? Sometimes they swap back after sometime when their power wears off, sometimes they just swap powers or position but sometimes people think they are the person they swapped with. Sometimes they don't swap back.

>In one part of the story, them swapping back with a character they had swapped with made sense, but later the swap backs don't happen.
>Rahne (Wolfsbane) who turns into a wolf suddenly can split into multiple wolves? The art isn't clear about this, it literally just goes BAM five wolves. No explanation either.
>(Apparently this was a secondary mutant power revealed in Secret Empire from a few years ago, again, without the art really showing the transformation or narration explaining it, it made me go, huh?)
>Multiple FULL pages of text that add NOTHING to the story, but hey Hickman did that so we should copy him. It is either: character backstory stuff the story is making plain (like the trans character had drama with her asexual friend, we don't need text chats between pages that add nothing when the drama is on the page) or it'll be stuff involving the villain for cheap attempts at jokes.
>Villain Count Nefaria has been camped up again, just like Sinister got camped up.

>They defeat the U-Men.
>Also there was a subplot of asexual chocolate power friend dying in a vision, but spoiler, he doesn't die. He also turns the bad guys weapon against Krakoa into.. chocolate.
>Then Lethal Legion is about Escapade wanting to fuck Cerebella (pic related) and tries to fix her trauma by pulling a heist on Count Nefaria, but realises she shouldn't have imposed this mission on her and they should just help each other fix their shit instead.

This one. Was it the worst comic I'd EVER read? No. But it was the straw that broke this camel's back. THIS was the bellweather that told me comics were over, that everything going forward was just poorly written propaganda by broken hack writers.

Two literal WHO's show up, the girl is literally just as good as Cap (why? because she's a WOMAN!) meanwhile you just knew the male was going to get pulped because he's a male and a White male at that. The ruination of Cap at the end was just the icing on the turd. Add in what Marvel was up to in the rest of their books with FemThor and "ask me about my feminist agenda", it was clear that the writing would be forever predictable, women were all paragons of perfection (which somehow makes Superman "boring" but it's okay when EVERY female character is the same undefeatable perfection, same with certain minorities.)

While this wasn't the worst thing I'd ever read, this was the book that made me abandon Marvel and stop reading ALL comics made after 2016. The feminist crap was really getting bad, but Orange Man absolutely broke everyone and led to an industry purge. And now here we are.

the frustrating thing about this is metlzer's writing style is quite good, and the way he writes ollie and some of the moments he writes (like ralph talking about how he met sue, the funeral, superman and his family, merlyn and the calculator and the extended universe as a whole) was decent.
but as you say, the murder mystery made ZERO sense (especially given ray still loved jean and jean initiated the divorce), the silver-age JL slander was disheartening, and the deathstroke fight was one of the most retarded things I have ever seen, particularly wally literally running into a sword for no reason
also, killing off ronnie raymond for no reason was a bit uncalled for

the superman hearing what he wants to I feel was more an implication that he knew what the league had done to light and batman but thought it was the lesser of two evils, and then batman at the end apparently knows what he wants to know and recognised that what happened to him was necessary for the league to continue (which then obviously changed in countdown to infinite crisis, JLA and infinite crisis)

Spider-Totem is fine because outside of the Dr. Strange issue (which is in itself a fun issue) it can all be dismissed as deranged beliefs of other people.
Sins Past is irredeemable garbage but, as I mentioned, OMD isn't nearly as bad as people say. People [deservedly] hate it for being a retarded premise but the moment-to-moment storytelling is fine and outside of the last issue it isn't particularly bad. I don't think it's a good storyline but putting it on the same level as Ultimatum or Civil War 2 or whatever is, I believe, an overreaction.

JMS had AMS 500 which is a great issue. It also had the first Morlun story which was great; Aunt May finding out Peter's identity; Peter being a chemistry teacher; that Spider-Wasp lady; and a fun story with Doc Ock. It has a lot of good aspect (albeit almost all of them from the first half of his tenure on the title) and his writing was solid. I won't apologize or be browbeaten into pretending that JMS didn't do a lot of good to balance out the bad he did on AMS.

I'm pretty sure cops who like the Punisher hate crooked cops with a passion. Punisher is their fantasy of someone not tied to the system fixing it, even if brutally.
The Punisher comes from the same era as Dirty Harry, when crime was up and people felt helpless. Now crime is up again, but the "progressive" thing to do is to blame poverty or society instead of the people actually committing crimes. Another fatal stabbing in London? Sad, but have you considered how horrible racism is? Etc. Punisher is Marvel's own middle finger aimed at themselves.

There was a small window of time where Hollywood people got a lot of credits in some comics. I don't think any of them had any more involvement on their books than something like the Stan Lee method.

The Mephisto part is what absolutely ruins it. Sans it, the story is about Peter trying to move heaven and earth to get out of the consequences of his actions, only to realize that he can't save May.
Even if it ended with he and MJ split-up, the implication would have been that they could absolutely get back together when they felt it was safe.

Honestly, I don't know whether to laugh at or applaud this guy. It takes balls to come up with this plan right from the start instead of it just happening by accident. Like, there's precedent for supporting OC characters eclipsing the main character or the OC's getting their own story as a back-up feature (Archie Sonic immediately comes to mind), so it could have worked if he played the long game.

But at the same time, even Ken Penders didn't have one of Knuckles' family members look directly in the camera and say "This comic book is literally just my failed script that Image never bought. Fuck Sonic, Fuck Knuckles, and Fuck Sega! This is The Lost Ones now and there's nothing you can do about it!" Not to mention that very funny levels of Dobsonian "I HATE ANIME (he cries as his character is literally a Ranma 1/2 reject)"

>OMD isn't nearly as bad as people say.

I agree that the storytelling wasn't that bad, but the problem is what it made us lose. Ultimatum ruined the Ultimate universe? Oh well, at least it had some nice moments, and even got rebooted in an interesting way recently. Civil War 2 ruined Carol Danvers? Well her new "Marvel's Wonder Woman" characterisation was boring anyway, I much preferred her as a drunk fuckup. OMD making Spider-Man sell his marriage to the devil in order to make his elderly aunt live again, returning everything to a younger status quo is the denial of Spider-Man's responsibility motto both in-universe for Peter and in real life for Marvel Comics itself. It ruined Spider-Man conceptually so much that I could not take any of the further comics seriously since then. I'm not a hater, btw, I have sincerely tried many times to enjoy new Spider-Man comics, and I just couldn't.

Quesada and JMS original plan was to resurrect Gwen and Harry and restore the pre-1971 status quo (Gwen dating Peter and Harry dating MJ) but everyone at Marvel vetoed the idea, so Quesada came out with Mephisto and somehow that was accepted. Either way OMD was always doomed to fail

NTA, but I completely disagree.

>>151165288
Meltzer wrote the most disjointed Justice League run I have ever read. He would constantly have 2 or 3 parallel scenes going for several issues, and it only made sense at the very end when everything converges.

I don't understand how writers don't get this, but if the if the reader can't tell what the FUCK is happening, it is not entertaining, it is just frustrating. His ENTIRE run is like this. Complete dogshit. The climaxes weren't even that exciting, either.

It's a shame such cool-looking art was ruined with dogshit writing. Grant Morrison's earlier JLA run should have used Benes's art.
