I feel like essentializing everything into "tropes" makes things feel robotic. Like its a "death of art" kind of thing where you aren't writing "characters" and instead you're writing "tropes".

Its like power scalers, but where power scalers are fun to talk to because they said crackhead shit like "This guy, beat that guy, who beat that guy, who beat this multiversal guy, so the first guy is multiversal!" tropers just say "that's the pee pee poo poo trope" with no real thoughts behind it in relation to art. You can explain the trope, but that doesn't mean you get the trope or how it works with art.

I think it's because shallow TV serialization writing often is formulaic, deeper than just rising and falling action, conflict, climax, b story, etc stuff and it gets further reduced to simple personality types defined in artistically easy to categorize ways. Cranking out many episodes through the years has people going to old reliables: body swap episodes, double booking, mistaken identity, shrinking episodes, witch trials, etc. They all become proper nouns and creates a culture where you feel smarter for diagnosing and knowing media, you know the moving parts and their names. And there are some industry words for some things but I can see how making a culture about that is dumb. It's also alienating; most people don't know your tropes and reviewing what you like or don't like doesn't require a trope for reference.

Something I'm happy has died out is the unending obsession with Madoka Magica and Doctor Who. Every page had an example from MM and all the WMGs had this awful running gag about someone being a Time Lord. To the degree that it was starting to feel like tropers didn't even know what a Time Lord was. A lot of the most actually autists who need the thing they like to be on every page seem to have been chased off the site.

A trope is a tool, like a hammer or screwdriver. Proper use is good. Subversion is like using a screwdriver handle to get in a nail, sure it works, but a hammer would have been better for that situation.

On Tvt, they're so heavily moderated and censored by the mods and jannies that they have to walk on eggshells to get anything done. Now imagine that said 'worst thing' was your drug addicted, abusive, and delusional boyfriend allowing his dealers to gang rape you. Because they needed 'payment' mind you- that's right, he sold me to get a hit. Now imagine that you also have borderline personality disorder, and have to look at your scars to remind you that the past is real (Papa Roach reference not intentional), and that your life has been such a Trauma Conga Line since you were 12, when your mother died, and since then you fell into alcholism, drug abuse and depression, to the point where you wouldn't know who you were if you weren't suffering. Imagine you only went out with said abusive etc ex on the rebound, because the girl you truly loved DIED of a heroin overdose. This is not a Drugs Are Bad message. It is this troper's life.
Even stuff like this seems more commonplace (but with less text)

>Execution is king, but a commonality is going to keep existing whether you notice it or not, and recognizing them is useful if you're going to take future action.

Not really, since things are neither good nor bad just for being frequently used. That information is in fact totally worthless to begin with, it doesn't matter which things happen often in unrelated pieces of media. The site itself says as much somewhere, "tropes" are not something you're supposed to avoid and they're not a negative or positive thing. They just are.

I find it hilarious how they removed snoot game because "muh transphobia bad!", but still keep this masterpiece up

Say that to 80% of this site when a woman is in a lead role. That's recognizing a trope and rejecting it.

A lot of the more insane changes made to the site are pretty blatantly only done because the trannies are running the show now. Like how every mention of JK Rowling has to remark on her "horrible comments"

>Five-Man Band
>Four actually, but...
For people obsessed with categorizing everything into ridiculously specific tropes they're surprisingly bad at following their own rules

The funniest thing ever is going to the Five Man Band page and counting out how many actual examples there are that aren't subversions or "well not 5 but..."

Yeah, I've people use tropes like, "Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold" or "Trans Audience Interpretation". I think that's just a bit too much.

I don't know if it's worst where every aspect of a work has to be one of the site's tropes, or when they take the definition of the trope really surface-level so it applies to anyhing
