Absolutely this. Not much relationship experience either. Just boring styles as well. I’m noticing many many many animators born in California or New England. The blended blob culture of both has resulted in a very dull animation landscape desu

There's a big misunderstanding about what SOL is supposed to be among contemporary American artists. Slice of life is not supposed to be like a self-indulgent diary entry: "this happened to me, that happened to this person, I live X kind of lifestyle, etc".

What SOL is SUPPOSED to be:
>taking the most interesting/weird/bizarre/funny/charming/odd things that happened to you, your friends and family, and your community in your daily lives, and using that as a vehicle for adventure or comedic storytelling

There's all sorts of school SOL manga and various American SOL sitcoms (cartoon or live-action) that reuse the same settings and stock characters. What makes the best stand out from the forgettable trash is the sheer amount of whimsy/fun and how dedicated they are to finding beauty and joy in the simple things.

You won't find that in stuff like pic related because even if lots of people in California share similar lives, they're not willing to do the emotional work to separate themselves from the crowd in how they tell stories. Japan is very collectivist and pro-conformity, but you can't tell me that Nichijou and Azumanga Daioh are completely interchangable.

I'd argue that the root cause for "everything looks the same these days" is composed of multiple factors

>literacy rates are low (they kinda always have been, particularly in America) but they've never been lower among artists until now
>mass surveillance/cellphone and social media culture creating mass anxiousness and the normalization of being comfortable with not truly being yourself (and chasing trends)
>artists these days are more anti-business than ever (which can be good but also extremely bad), especially when it comes to common sense
>the 08 recession and its consequences

I think a major issue is that unlike other mediums, indie animation takes so much time and is something you get into young and requires certain locations that as a result the type of people who bother to do it are very similar

People who wrote novels in years past always came from more interesting lives because those novels spawned from a story to tell. People who slave away drawing frames of a cartoon in hopes to pitch it to hollywood are obviously gonna wage slave to make ends meet and put out their trendy toon while they're under 40.

Literacy is in the shitter because the DoE once again changed the methods and standards by which reading is taught to try and keep retarded shitskins from flunking out of kindergarten, and it fucked the later end of the zoomer generation and the gen alpha kids so bad that they can't even really read and only parse meaning, which they invent based on arbitrary whims. So if you're ever in an argument or just trying to explain something to someone online and they just keep coming up with wild asspull shit to be angry about that you never said or implied, you're probably dealing with one of the illiterate zoomer golems who is incapable of communication and articulation.

I think it shows that there is probably *some* appetite to see this lifestyle reflected in an animated medium the question is just how much appetite is there? I don't think the market can actually support that many shows like that. And of all the attempted pitches and projects I still think most of them would lose out to someone who wrote a more energetic lifestyle for it's cast. I live in Los Angeles and there's plenty of fun stuff I have never seen reflected in these kinds of projects that maybe other people could find interesting. Basically what >>151198808 says.

There's something sad about Americans generally being shit at making human SoL shows. King of the Hill might be the only one that captures a subculture and is actually a slice of life and not a dramacor wacky caricature of a specific town/city. With how many hobby SoL exist in Japan you'd think that more Western creators would do something like a hiking, biking, or craft hobby show. Even in the writing sphere all the "cozy cafe" fantasies are limited to cafe/basic storefront concepts.

Interesting how everyone itt is complaining about California when the show's Australian. Just for you to see how "flavorless" the show ended up being, which was one of my complaints. Like removing the English aspect out of Peep Show, the Canadian out of Trailer Park Boys, the New Yorkian out of Seinfeld.

This. Danshi no Koukousei is the best example I can think of for men. Most of the eps have things that probably happened to you and your friends, upped to a comedic extreme. (Could Mission Hill be used as a Western example?)

take centaurworld, which i consider a great show.
the asian author had a classic tiger mom, study to be a doctor kinda deal, and she found liberation in joining the theater club and hamming it up with friends.
the show is about a war horse isekai'd to an alternate reality which is all sunshine and rainbows on the surface and everything is just plain weird.

the average californian animator works in retail and their shows are about their self-insert working in retail but the situations are slightly exaggerated, if that

My slice-of-life cartoon would be about a neurotic schizo and self-proclaimed "intellectual" torn between hedonistic materialism and religious obligation. He never leaves his house and lives almost entirely in his head. The conflict is just the back-and-forth shower thoughts, dreams, and nightmares you have sitting alone in the house with thoughts running through your head. It's not a comfy cartoon, it's all seven-minute snapshots of life ("What should I have to eat? If I eat this, I'll probably die from health causes. It's too expensive. Not in the mood for that. Maybe I should cook, but I don't feel like going to the store. Maybe I'll just stick with water instead.") Episodes have a rambling structure and don't follow a formula.

In fairness, your critiques of California can always differ based on your own taste and politics. I've been hearing a lot more people lambasting SF/SV lately and only really hear people get mad about LA on /co/. Plus, the major cities of California are powerhouses in their own right, so people are going to pay attention to those places compared to places like Bakersfield or Davis.
>I always found it a bit unfair how everyone lambast CA
For better or for worse, California is a tastemaker and trendsetter for the US and a lot of the world. It probably sucks to get the criticism but it's also an enviable position to be in, in some ways.

Art should not be produced by people that have only consumed art. The best fantasy is written by historians. The best sci Fi is written by scientists

Goddamn this looks so soulless. Why are all cartoons now just awful scribbles? It looks like they tried to rip off chibi/kawaii art but the lack of construction means you get problems like the weird slanted mouth, the tumor ear and the pointless whiskers. Why can't modern animators actually learn to observe, construct and draw before they actually animate?

That's his facial hair
Overall, it looks fine to me, the perspective of the background is alright too

>but otherwise you are correct that Califags think their self-inflicted lifestyle of being a barista in one of the extremely expensive west coast cities, wallowing in college debt and mental illness is interesting and compelling material for cartoons and shows and it's not.

For the most part, the market isn't making your cartoon if you aren't living in California. There's countless people coming into the woodchipper they don't need to go out there way to look for people elsewhere.

This is a queer metaphor for their belief that if you don’t go along with their lifestyle you won’t get to live life at all - hence being a nonsensical reply, it’s just triggered in a situation rather than real speech of a person
