Why didn't this have the staying power of SpongeBob?

It was popular for a few years, got three movies and a couple of spinoffs, then it just completely fizzled and dried up. Even the CGI reboot died after two seasons and was completely forgotten.

Spongebob keeps going and going and going like the Energizer bunny. What does the sponge have that the babies didn't?

Nigga, you realize rugrats ran for over 14 years with 3 films and spin off in its run right? lasting over a decade in a half is good time to end.

Rugrats had already gone to shit by the time Spongebob aired, and Spongebob became Nick's gold standard for ratings they compared everything else to. As to why the cultural impact of Rugrats feels smaller, I think it's because Rugrats reruns stopped being common right around the time the internet started to actually become popular with the masses, while Spongebob reruns have been common for that entire time. I don't think I've even seen a Rugrats meme since "Stu makes pudding at 4 AM" and that was over a decade ago now, never mind stuff like pic-related.

>It was popular for a few years,
Rugrats existed for 13 years. That's a hell of a long time even before the spinoffs.

Spongebob came out right as the franchise was dying with shitty spinoffs like All Grown Up.

Rugrats does not hold up. It is a very boring show and once you get past the 90s nostalgia crowd it really has no audience
So kind of like Jetsons

Not to mention the creators were also working on other cartoons at the same time.
It's easy for Spongebob to exist forever when you put all your resources into one show.

SpongeBob appeals more to a older audience and is funnier

Rugrats is an interesting show to rewatch as an adult.
When I was a kid I thought the adults' B plots were boring but now that I'm older I empathize with the parents' perspective more.
It was originally for the parents watching the show with their kids at the time it aired, but it also seems like they made a show that required their target audience to age before being able to appreciate it completely.

As for the OP: it simply fell out of style. Rugrats clearly fits the 90s with it's rough animation style and gross out humor, but the clean thick-outline style of the 2000s holds up better today.

I disagree, 90’s style is good

I don't know, OP. The fact that Rugrats ran as long as it did, got a couple theatrical and direct-to-video movies, a few spin-offs, comics strips, video games, merchandising, a recent reboot, AND a planned live-action movie is the complete opposite of being completely fizzled and dried up.

It did. What killed interest was All Grown Up. I think old Spike was too much of a momento mori for people.

What do you think caused Rugrats to overtake Ren & Stimpy as the most popular Nicktoons of the 90s?

Rugrats was already dying anyway, so meh.

Always thought the show was gonna have a Spike dies episode before getting cancelled.
