On Rewriting Comics

I was really happy with the original version of QC #2379. But literally the moment after I posted it, a worrying thought popped into my head. It seemed to me that some people might misinterpret the intent of the comic. Instead of being “ha ha, Marten’s mom is all broody because of the wedding*,” it might be read as “ha ha, Claire is trans and Marten’s mom doesn’t know” or something even worse. And that is absolutely not the kind of joke I ever want to make!

My first thought was “that’s silly, nobody would misinterpret the comic like that.” But if I could see reading the strip that way, certainly other people might. And that bothered me, so after thinking about it for a while I decided to change it.

A common mistake people make when writing is to assume that the writer’s intent automatically trumps all other interpretations. That’s not actually how it works. Different interpretations can be just as valid as that of the author, and this can get you into deep trouble if you’re careless. I do my best to keep this in mind when writing, and to keep myself honest and try to do the right thing when I catch myself making a misstep. I hope it helps.
