there is a website called photopea and it is essentially photoshop cs6 but free!! and the fact it exists is insane by that alone. im serious, very few things youre limited to by using this, its what i used prior to photoshop cs2 and i still use it for some things.

generally speaking, within most photo editing tools you will default to the "brush" tool, which is a paint brush but the thing is, if you draw with this it will give your pictures complete anti-aliasing, which makes it to where your sharp pixels are "curved" by adding additional small similar colored pixels that makes it look somewhat artifacty if you zoom in close. HORRIBLE for pixel work!!!!! D:<

so INSTEAD we want to use the alternative, the PENCIL TOOL and if your program doesnt have that look for something known as the binary tool or binary brush. if it doesnt have it, you can download one off the internet. it essentially is the brush tool without all the antialiasing crap and will allow you to get sharp edges like in picrel :D
