How come serious webcomics artists and creators never get as popular and widespread as coom illustrators on the internet those days?
There are a shitload of superskilled NSFW and social media artists online yet I don't know any semi-professionally drawn current day webcomics made by a skilled amateur, and the webcomics that were popular back in their heyday like Girl Genius, Homestuck, Twokinds, etc. started decades ago, even KSBD is 12 years old as of now

You answered yourself.

The webcomic model was advertising and shirt sales, neither of those is very lucrative. Patreon is a lot easier for erotica artists because they can tailor to specific tastes, it's very difficult to get someone to back a webcomic indefinitely (though this does still happen.)

Webtoons, the site, took over the online webcomic market.
It was also easier to promote yourself a decade ago online compared to now. Back then you could get organic growth from tags and searches, but now you have to hope the algorithm favors you or someone massively popular promotes you.

is that considered a fan-service heavy title? because I think a lot of mainstream success is on scale different than our little bubble, and I feel like OP's impression might not be accurate assessment of the actual market as a whole.

Does anyone know if webcomics can still get some sizable amount of following if you don't cater to romance/coom/being relatable? I'd like to earn some side money, but I don't really care about those genres

If it's for side money I don't think you'd have much luck, you'd have to fully commit to something.

You want to earn side money but you don't want to make anything that people are looking for.
.. Huh?

well if it's just a hobbyist comic hoping get a few dollars, i don't see anything wrong with it

if someone is aiming for full money, then you'd have to cater to the biggest market

is it the algorithm that does this or people tend to press the like button on coom things more?
