Found out Spawn is still going despite me thinking it ended in like 2005. Is it still good? Worth getting back into?

Spawn is best read when you pick a random issue and just look at the cool visuals

Todd's main business is the toy company. Comics are a side thing for him.

Spawn is an art book more than anything. McFarlane is a great artist. He is a GOD AWFUL writer. For better or worse.

It wasn't good from the start. It took like 8 issues for Todd to even establish a concept other than LOL HELL and Neil Gayman did it for him.

I was very disappointed.
The only early image books I liked were Savage Dragon and Cyberforce.

I'm 100% the only reason spawn is from hell is because of the 90s satanist panic. todd saw it as free advertisement. he was originally from space, because of star wars.

He has continuously done well his one major talent, which is making cool-looking shit
The plot is a bit all over the place, but it is still a fun ride because of the cool shit

He's not a god-awful writer.
There are two timescales which are important - the macro-level (the plot as a whole) and the micro-level (individual dialogue and narration blocks). The worst writer is one who sucks at both.
McFarlane is good at the microscopic. Individual pages are cool and panelled well and can have interesting lettering. His macroscopic is his weakness, there are a ton of plot threads that go nowhere and the franchise as a whole constantly changes its opinion on certain characters and how large their roles should be.
That being said, because individual pages are still fun, reading it is still fun.

I really liked it up until the end of armageddon, however...
the first few issues felt aimless, todd had to make a comic right then from his half baked idea. the costume was over designed, and the amnesia thing was there just so he doesn't need to commit to anything just yet.
then it felt more and more of an endless drag just trying to delay things further. armageddon was just an "oh shit we're bleeding readers, quick, we need to do the thing!" stunt, and it was rushed. a great read but I expected more.
after that, things went south. no more cool artists. he instantly retconned the emotional gut punch, then rebooted the story with jim downing. the worst part, jim's story felt explicitly like a netflix drama. not much supernatural, just walls of text with traced human faces. satan wars was lame. omega was lame. hell's throne needed way better execution. the artist sucked and the new designs for angels and demons suck shit. the powerless part was a good idea on paper but didn't change anything. the latest arc was mcu tier retarded. but at least he brought back globb shitto!!
I don't think he has the artists and writers to pull his ideas off anymore. spawn is a mix of urban horror and supernatural, and everything just devolves into a fucking beat em ups these days, even if the scales are cosmic level at times.
