So why does everyone in Family Guy hate Meg exactly?
This is the one running gag they've never given up on and it's also the one running gag I've never understood. What's so hateable about Meg other than the fact that she's an otherwise unremarkable character?
Anonymous No.151206166 [Report] >>151206856
because that's the joke and part of the status quo
the episode in your image is the show loudly admitting its status quo
whether you find that joke funny or not is irrelevant to the writers

i think it was a relic from season 1 where she was literally just a normal teenage girl, but she had a bit of a manipulative streak and was kinda shitty to the other characters
over time the audience disliked her and the showrunners just took that dislike and made the "meg sucks" joke and everyone loved it because she was finally getting some retribution for being annoying
and then they just kept it going for 10+ years

>because that's the joke
Yup. There's no good reason to hate meg yet they do. And thats the joke.

haven't seen it since like 2013 but if i had to guess it was at least partially to poke fun at how Lisa is portrayed in the Simpsons.

It was because the writers didn't know how to write a teenage girl by their own admission so in the early seasons, they gunned for a "Homer chokes Bart" style gag of "Let's be honest, sometimes we want to."
In this case, telling them to shut the fuck up with the hormonal angst and stop acting like their life is harder than everyone else's. Something everyone who has had a teenager has wanted to do at least once.
This snowballed into a flanderization of no one liking anything about Meg until she became the punching bag of the show.

They stopped doing this gag years ago, now Meg is just random wildcard girl

she hasn't really been the show's punching bag in like a decade

earlier seasons she typically had teenage girl problem plots, they were likely the least popular episodes so by the time of the revival the writers were aware of juts how disliked her plots were and probably didn't want to write teenage girl plots either
as years went by, and writers shifting there seemed to be a regret on making her the show's punching bag so they tried looking for ways to rectify that while still making her fit in the show's raunchy world. one of those making her gross, desperate, and borderline psychopathic
in the last few seasons whats also been part of her stories is that she's not someone who underestimate

its always kind of weird when people make complaints about family guy that are over a decade old. the show has changed, and if you're not watching the show to know that, why are you still invested in making commentary on it?

I simply don't understand how nobody is stating the obvious, but the joke didn't start for some grand reason as stated by most of the post, it was because the original voice actor left the show after season 1; she is not actually shit on until the change of voice actor, as a way of mocking the character that dipped.

the meg hate gag didn't start well into the 4th season though

No, the fourth season has the catchphrase "shut up meg", and so it's recorded and easy to find. Also, Kunis joins the show about the end of season 2, so the first instance of "shut up meg" as a catchphrase is hardly that far off, and it's worth the mention that most if not all episodes of season 2 and probably several of season 3 were already written before the voice actor change.

By my "impression" and some possibly fake memories i have of the writers mentioning it, as Family Guy is a parody of family sitcoms, the "bitchy teenage daughter" is always considered the worst part of such shows since it is very annoying and superficial trope
Like, remember any family sitcom, of any of them who will say that their favorite character is the teenager daughter? She never has any jokes, she is just mean and nasty to everyone with "you are embaaaaarrassing me" or "i can't wait to leave this house", plus the episodes and subplots foccused on her are always about some lame sugary lesson about social life or school drama
It's funny because even today the "subversive" modern sitcoms have this shit, Rick and Morty has Summer (who you must be insane to have has a favorite character unless you want to fuck her), Modern Family had A LOT of this, Koala Man had so many forced worthless sideplots about the bitch daughter high school bullshit. It is quite honestly a trope no one would miss if it died

and season 4 is when the show came back from cancelation to where there is a pretty significant change in tone by then
its probably fairer to assume by the time of season 4 the writers were more aware of how disliked meg episodes were and decided to play that up for the show's much more edgier identity at the time.
if they wanted to think of her as a punching bag because the voice actor changed they would have at least done it at season 3.

It's the same reason why Kenny always died in South Park, but eventually the writers stopped doing that.

It was just some gag of the earlier seasons. The joke was that Meg was ugly, fat, and undesirable.

In universe, I’m not sure why she’s not popular as she’s kinda cute in a Velma sort of way.
Meanwhile Chris is a fat fuck looking loser who would not be popular with that body type and voice in real life. So why is he popular in the show?

It's the Cartoon Nondetail joke. It's like Toot or Ren and Stimpy. She looks cute and simple from a distance upclose she's fat with bad skin and facial hair along with smelling bad.

No it's that they had no other ideas for Meg so they just went all in on making fun of her. She didn't really have much of an easily exploitable gimmick before that

>Lisa Simpson
If anything the Family Guy version of Lisa Simpson is Brian. He was the go to intellectual liberal soapbox mouthpiece like Lisa but when the writers realized people were starting to sour on Brian they did a complete pivot into making him not an actual intellectual but a pseudo-intellectual and all around shitty person.

Simpsons has made a bit of fun of Lisa for her politics but Family Guy went full in on making fun of Brian.
