I think we talking in terms of television animation, Ren & Stimpy was what paved the way for more creator driven cartoons, but I feel like creation would have to be owed to The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, it helped end the animation dark age and gave us John K and Bruce Timm who would create incredibly influential series, Avatar wouldn’t exist without Batman: TAS seeing how influential it was to action cartoons.

I'm thinking broadly and the profits that funds themselves. Anime is the biggest moneymaker and extremely influencial. I would have just chosen the Spirited Away girl, Sailor Moon or Goku. But I did wanted to stick with western stuff, so Avatar was the closest equivalent. And Avatar at least reveal it's process, they brought in a martial artist to Korea Animator slaves to teach them styles for reference. Btas never really accomplished that well. I never own any Ren and Stimpy merch. Animator driven works can just lump with Adventure Time

Many will deny it, but this is correct. Ren and Stimpy changed kids cartoons significantly, we went from "I want to make my own version of Looney Tunes" to more original shows about duos and trios rather than large casts. It's not relevant now because so much has been influenced by it that it seems cliche and backwards now.
