This is a consequence of fans of Sonic writing Sonic. A lot of them aren't overly creative to begin with and all they can think to do is to write from their frame of reference, which is and will always be "fan of Sonic the Hedgehog." Or fan or some other character in his universe. A good writer would analyze Sonic and do interesting stuff with him rather than keep introducing recolors or le funny references to kneel and suck the character's toes. People talk shit about Fleetway but it was someone taking the character and writing them to be interesting in a new way.

They're okay enough despite how much shit-flinging goes on with 4chan. The Archie Comics provide some fairly unique takes on the games early on, though the later stuff devolves into constant drama and relationship stuff and gets kinda weird until the "Reboot" phase. The IDW comics have some good plots and is also not as bad as it's given credit for but often falls short of something truly great. If you check out IDW then Scrapnik Island is the best they've put out so if you read any of these I suggest that. If you REALLY like it I guess you can try the others, just bear in mind they're pretty hit or miss outside of that one. The characterizations are frustrating at times and the only two plots besides Scrapnik that felt coherent were the Metal Virus and the Starline stuff.

You're in for a treat. Fleetway Sonic is a total dick but he's completely committed to being a hero. He verbally abuses Tails all the time, even when Tails stops being a 0 IQ kid and becomes a capable hero on his own. He's such a dick that even Amy loses interest in him. The only person he's always nice to is Kintobar. Only problem is that the series death spirals when it becomes random one and done stories and each issue reprints more and more old stories.

I really do not understand the appeal. I don't consider myself a hater but so very little of substance happens in the comic. And even the OCs don't get to really develope or do anything interesting. Most are either locked in a particular status quo or already had their big monent and are just hanging around now. The exception is Starline. Cause he died.
The arcs just feel like nothingburger after nothingburger after the zombot stuff.
It's like they genuinely don't have any ideas to work with. Lanolin being a glaring example. I don't even understand what they were going for with her.
Pretty much the only saving grace is rare moments where you get to see game characters interact with game characters. And it's more of a novelty than anything significant.

Basically the issue is, after how crazy Archie went, now SEGA keeps everything under a magnifying glass. Hence why the arcs feel so tamed and the characters don't have a chance to do more or the stories aren't allowed to go further. I do wish SEGA would just give some more leeway, so the writes could do some crazy stuff. Heck, it's one of the reason the MLP comics were so fun, Hasbro didn't pay attention and the writes were allowed to banans with the stories, even making 'em dark as fuck sometimes.

It's hard to say, it seems like SEGA even has their eyes set on the OC's as well. So, I guess they kinda give a shit, mostly because since they still appear in the comics.

I think ambition can only go so far, when you're told "You cannot do X, you cannot do Y", an etc. Like, even Starlines death was shown of camera, in the Archie days they wouldn't even DARE to shy away from that material.

No, Sonic wasn't a bully but he still had an aditude, the kinda guy who'd make fun of you but would step up if someone tried to beat you up. I wouldn't want to risk my shit turning into endless romance drama either, but I wish they'd just take the route of having someone greenlight stuff instead of just outright saying "You can't do this.". I think it would be the best middle ground approach. Sonic already had his hero's journey and reached his endgame before the games even happen.
