Don't sort by hits on AO3. That's half of what causes your problem. More extreme kinks = more tags = shows up in more searches = more hits. I think it just makes it easier for someone to see right away that it's a story if they see a massive block of green text. Also, I find them fairly easy "edit" while writing. It makes it immediately apparent if you've been using the same word to start a sentence too often or if the sentences are too similar in length or structure (e.g. inverting a sentence with a comma, something I tend to default to)
