They're boring and poorly motivated, uncompelling people. Homolka was boring. It's a big problem with female monsters. The compulsion to humanize them and give them sensible motives works against the genre, since that becomes the story and that story is a drama, not horror.

The scary version of why does Hachishakusama want the young narrator is nobody knows. She's an ancient demon god and the wards that kept her sealed were destroyed over centuries, forgotten save as demon warded stones. Maybe she'll crawl down his throat and wear him like a skinsuit like that amanojaku legend. Maybe she'll just eat him. Maybe gramps doesn't know the real banishing ritual because no-one does. That's not psychological horror, not really.

You can't because it's too high concept and thus everyone's perspective on what counts as psychological horror will be different. What one person finds psychologically horrifying will be different to another's, etc. One of the few horror concepts that's universally true for everyone is the age old fear of getting eaten by some big predator/monster. It's a primal fear, and one of the reasons Jaws works so well (aside from the fact that Jaws is just a really well done movie). Alien and The Thing are about being trapped in a "house" with a toothy monster running around killing everything. It's not the only horror type I should say, but it's a universal primal one.

I suppose you could have a setup where you and a group of friends/strangers are shrunk and stuck in a house, and there's a normal sized girl trying to kill you all. Either set it in the days before cell phones, or have cell phones not work after being shrunken or something. If you want to make it more psychological, maybe the killer plays audio and video recordings of her victims or has a photo album, etc. I like this setup because it reminds me of Amnesia: The Bunker. In that game you're trapped in a World War 1 bunker in France and have to evade a big monster trying to kill you. But even if you do escape the monster and the bunker, you're still in the middle of fucking World War 1. So even if the shrunken people did manage to escape the house, they're still tiny in a world that's extremely dangerous to small stuff. Birds, snakes, insects, etc, all far more deadly at a small size. Hell maybe you meet another survivor who's been there for months and hasn't left because he thinks his chances on the outside are too slim. Maybe the house is a secluded farmhouse, and not one in a suburb or city block.

Taking the name and pressing on the idea of a connection is a misstep. Especially since Shizue's Saeko's power origins and nature do matter to her stories, she wouldn't eat people in the original if she was not compelled to. The gamedev was even younger than original Saeko when he first read the stories, I assume a fanfic version of Saeko lived in his head for years due to the original having made an impression on him. The fanfic that existed in his head must have lost connection to the original over the years to become a representation of his fetish, which is probably much tamer nowadays than it was in the early phase. I've misremembered plenty of giantess stories, and for a few years I misremembered Mamabliss' art as being significantly better than it was upon revisit. Not a good reason to press the connection but sufficient reason to give credit, and I'm not sure how credit should be given in those cases. "Based on" is offensive levels of overstatement, but even "inspired by" or "derivative of" implies the game tries to carry the same energy when it obviously doesn't.

There's a difference between optional dialogue and throwaway dialog. First night with Saeko suggesting that she may feed people to you during one of the most dangerous optional dialog paths is optional dialogue and is good as such because it ties the entire Can Personalities Change discussion into a bow with the genocide route's beach dialog and to the genocide ending in general. Including the fact that you perform the act of chewing in order to force feed Clara. Really good entirely optional dialogue reinforces the rest of the story, which will only be seen by people who are really interested in the story because it's structured to be frustratingly hard to reach.

The stone mask is complete throwaway dialogue which has zero (0) death paths to act as deterrents so pretty much everyone who reaches the part of the game where it is given will read it first time around. The fact that it's only there to be a nod is a bad thing since in a story this small you should not have dialogue branches that just stick out at the end, especially when the other optional dialog does generally tie back in. Those sorts of dialog lines become barbs, thorns. When a revelation like that is unimportant it should receive an unimportant consequence which is just enough to tie that barb back in. Like just have two different pixel art decoration items in Rin's after-credits sequence, a broken mask and a whole one, in some sort of mounting on his wall. Small enough to be unnoticed if someone's not looking or somehow avoided that line of dialog.

That is not how fiction works. Something is not a writing flaw because "It stood out to me because I didn't like the explanation given". The point of the line is just to establish that there was never any hope of fighting back against Saeko because she's functionally a physical god with innate abilities, and the mask is just an homage to the story. That's it. Having a pixel mask on Rin's desk would add nothing and in fact would be detrimental to the story's themes because people would interpret it as there being some way for other people to inherit her abilities through the mask when that isn't the idea.

I'd expect the opposite really. Giant Male is bad because gigantism is the sexual target and the small characters are useful more for sexual projection. Maru was originally designed as a girl so my headcanon is that girl Maru's story could have been very different from what we see in game. I have no reason to believe that other than disliking that part. Maru's story ties in two elements of the Shizue Fueti stories, death by urination and the involvement of insects, so it was probably never going to be different.

Maru's theme is self-disgust leading to repression of the memory of guilt, which compelled a lifelong pattern of trying to be the opposite of who he knew he really was in order to avoid remembering himself. I don't like how it was done.

So, fix-fanfic girl Maru would not have exercised cruelty to animals. Instead girl Maru started her school career as a tomboy and a bully who had one particular girl target. Girl Maru one day forced her to drink all the leftover milk which was intended for disposal, a significant amount of which was spoiling because she wanted that girl to piss herself in fear in order to see her power over her made visible. The bullied girl never pissed herself and Maru had to let her go at some point in order to go home. They never saw each other again but Maru learned she made the other girl very sick and her parents had to pull her from school. Maru was harshly beaten by her mother after that and her parents never saw her the same way again so she tries to avoid seeing her former self in the mirror. Maru thinks perhaps that Saeko might be the same girl she used to bully (denied in the following night conversation). Maru being terrified to the point of urinating in fear even though the girl she bullied never did. The conversation that follows is about misremembering yourself instead of about accurate memories.
