When you wake up and start to think about things like "where is my dream journal" and "what do I need to do today" those thoughts take up space in your boat and pushes the dream fish into the water where they swim away. So before you start thinking about anything else, you want to look at the fish in your boat and try to put hooks into them that are tied off to your boat. That way when other ideas start coming into your boat and the dream-fish get pushed out, you can reel them back in when you're ready to write them down.

What you are actually doing is trying to find something that is easier to remember, but which let's you recall the rest of the dream, so let's say I had a dream about a giantess that comes out of a lake while I'm fishing and swallows my boat. I could just think of the word "fishing" that's one hook, or "anchor" to use my previous terminology. Then I might think, I wanna make sure I remember the part where she swallowed my boat, so I think of the words "swallows boat". Now I have the anchors "fishing" and "swallows boat". Much easier to remember than the experiential and fleeting dream experience.

This way when I get my journal and start writing and getting interrupted by more and more waking thoughts, I don't find the dream has completely disappeared by the time I have pen to paper and I don't lose some parts of the dream while writing others down. I can reel in the way the lake and weather looked by remembering I was fishing and I can remember the details of my boat rocking and the darkness of entering her mouth.

You don't need to use words as anchors, if you can remember specific shapes or feelings vividly. It just needs to be something you can hang onto and use to recall the rest of the dream.
