Kind of surprised there aren't more stories that turn the whole Aladdin story on its side. Like the genie actually is a devil and a woman and wants Aladdin to fail so she can keep him for herself.

It's interesting that female genies come and go. Same with witches. How many shows has the west had about witches? Bewitched, two or three Sabrina cartoons, 1 Sabrina live action. Genies? I dream a Genie and that Hanna Barbara Jeanie cartoon.

I Dream a Genie and Bewitched both get to the heart of the issue and were about marrying the magical woman. Its kind of amazing to think America was doing this in 1965. No beating around the bush like with stuff like Buffy with rhe off and off again. No, from episode 1 you know they're together.

Also kind of wild just how much of anime was inspired from those two shows. Even Urusei Yatsura was partially inspired from I dream a genie and Jeanie the cartoon. The way Lum floats around and the way she has amazing powers.

But I digress. I wish if American TV was going to give up on action cartoons they would embrace stuff like this again and not mainly focus on school cartoons.

Kinda. Dragonball flushes most of the lore in favor of focusing on their magical or demon origin. Wish granting by an all powerful being that hides in an object is left to the Dragon. The DB Maijin are more like demons that consume people to absorb their spirit or energy.

Android 21 is also only part Maijin.

The book is actually good, even if it leans a bit heavily on Middle Eastern names. The author did a great job incorporating jinn lore from different mythologies into something cohesive and compelling.

Its interesting that 1001 nights has all kinds of genies and they are essentially a race of nonhuman sapiens with magical powers and yet the English speaking world mostly only knows them as a very specific wish granting blue guy in a very specific lamp.

There is a good chance that aladdin was made up by the French. Or at least massive liberties were taken. But Antoine Galland did not invent the idea of good genies. Where did you get your claims from? They sound like something from those christian pamphlets they sent out in the mid 90s trying to get parents to not let their kids watch cartoons. They operate from the christian assumption that spirits or fairy folk or djinns are all evil demons that are destined for hell, which is not an assumption made in the Quran or other arab folktales
