I don't know a great deal about the development side of this stuff. What, if anything, are we waiting on for a new 'version' of Stable Diffusion that might create more coherent background elements or complex details, etc? Or is this a permanent limitation of the technology?

The new version of SD was so bad people gave up on the whole architecture. Within SDXL all people can do is retrain on different datasets, but we're far past the point of diminishing returns. Flux looked promising and its furry finetune Chroma, only the guy lied about including anime in there and it has no Danbooru knowledge. Similar deal with Auraflow and Pony v7. There's also netayume on Neta Lumina, which has a retarded text encoder quirk and sucks for nsfw, even though it is capable of basic stuff.

I expect the next decent one will be a finetune on Qwen image. Best one I've tried by far in terms of natural language understanding, and it can already do anime and nipples which should make for a good base.

So not only can it create coherent backgrounds but it can count, it understands left/right/up/down for positioning things, etc.

the biggest problem with most models is that they don't know artists, so everything ends up extremely generic and sterile. pony v7 made it a selling point and flopped. non-anime models doing anime look like sword art online screenshots, unless you say ghibli and then it looks nothing like ghibli. people keep coming back to illustrious and pony because of how many vectors of control over the artstyle they have.
