The only time I’ve seen a story make the “mind-break” or personality shift angle feel believable in a body swap scenario was one where the characters had small portions of their brains exchanged. The narrative used a sort of black-box theory: the foreign brain fragment carried traces of the original personality, but once transplanted, it was gradually consumed or assimilated by the host brain, which then reasserted its own traits and behaviors. This gave a pseudo scientific justification for both the body swap and the evolving personality changes.
