I am looking for all purpose medium tractor and i've came up with Case XL 956/1056. I have experience with Case tractors, i've worked with Magnum 7120 for a long time but XL series is completely new to me. Is any good? Could you guys tell me if there is any specific stuff that is prone to breaking?

what are you planning to do? What size fields and how wide are your tools?
Anonymous No.2857275 [Report] >>2857291

Tools would be mostly 3,5 - 4 m wide. And fields would be mostly 2,5 to 4 ha max, i'll see, i plan on getting around 20 ha max and splitting it in half, 10 for cattle farming and other 10 for grain cultivation. I'd like to slap a front loader on it.

>medium tractor
Yeah, kind of. Compared in size to 7120 or JDs my neighbours roll in it seems closer to MTZ 1221 than to Magnum.

jeez hobbyists really love pissing away money.
Mate who ever clowned you into that never heard of working economical.
You could easily size down to 2.5 - 3m and do everything with a 70-100 hp 4 cyl, which is also a better size for loader work, get everything done in nearly the identical time frame and save a shitton on consumables, tires and fuel. For reverence, full time Farmers here do between 100 and 400 ha (field shape depending) on 3m 180hp (4 ha heavy work per hour is easily doable) everything else is a pissing contest.
If i were in your Situation, trying to get all that done with just one tractor, i would probably go that rout and priorities getting air conditioning and a gearbox with full reverse gear set on steering column and a power shift group. basically what was state of the art of the mid 90s

I just did a tour of the Farm Museum out in Fort Langley and they have an extremely impressive collection of old tractors. Diesel gas and even a few Steam and boilerless ones as well.

Case, Massey, Deere and a few others.

My dad worked for the Canadian government occasionally as a Russian translator and one of his jobs was to translate a farm equipment manuals into Russian so that peasants could understand these machines and not accidentally fill up a gas tank with water.

In my stuff I still have a couple of boxes of these old manuals that he had. Most of them are nearly new and have never been touched by Greasy hands. Also some really good repair guides for some of the rare ones.

Depending on situation you can quite often get bigger cultivation kit relatively cheaper than smaller. For example 5-furrow, semi-mounted reversibe ploughs are ofter cheaper than 4-furrow mounted ploughs. And talking about economics, the only thing matter is cost per hectare and it's usually smaller with bigger, used kit versus small, new one. However like you said you should look at the big pucture and make choices based on that, there's no definite answer of what kit is the right choice.

And for the tractor in question, I'd go for a 5100 or MX series Case rather than those old IH based models. Former are much nicer with loader thanks for reverse shuttle versus latter with ZF's expensive-as-hell-to-repair manual gearbox. Or if you live in Europe, CS/CVX-branded Cases are still somewhat hidden gems.

Nah not really, rarely are locks even needed. Might be because there recently was a logging, and the forestry machine sunk some wood from thinnings a feet down in the clay for traction and... buyoancy? Increased shear strength for the clay anyway, so the machine doesnt sink. Also without the chains it would be absolutely impossible. The trailer can also get drive train power from the tractor, but so far it hasnt been necessary. Say what you want about russians but Belarus tractors are absolutely indestructible.

im wanting something i can use on undeveloped land that will help clear it and build a house. i have a truck that can tow a gooseneck but no trailer. my thoughts:

case 580's - extremely cheap 2wd backhoes and seem to be everywhere - but i have to buy/rent a big ass trailer

some sort of skidsteer - they're all expensive and look like hell to work on, but retain value and dont need a 26' trailer to be hauled

we used a 35hp kubota to build a pole barn and do yard work, at times it felt small and we had to call someone else out here to dig anything up

are there more perspectives i should be pondering?

Build what you want to drive. In the US custom pulling and modified tractors are common. My respect to those fabricators (serious farmers can fix much of what they own)

I wonder if kit tractors would become a thing?
Buy an engine, drivetrain, hydraulic pump and what other off the shelf components you'll need then Fabricate the chassis from specced steel stock and Viola a tractor that if needed you could customise during construction to suit you requirements.

This is bullshit. A lot of the parts in a tractor are not wear items, and apart from a ridiculous catastrophic failure would be fine for multiple lifetimes of use. Some parts are definitely wear items and replaceable.

have you never heard of fatigue?
We've had every fail there is either ourself or in the village.
broken frame, worn spline on the hitch links, cracked rim, exploded planetary gearset, multiple inch thick shafts (especially on combines) juts shearing off along a rusty fault line, multiple 1000€ each pcb's breaking due to fatiqued solder joints (no chance fixing, thanks to epoxy coating)
And thats just the catastrophic breakdowns, not the expected seals, bearings and bushings.
Like the repair budged for our combine is literally 5k per year, above that trading it in for a newer would be paid off in 5 years, or cheaper to hire a contractor

you know what fucks farmers in the ass? the time window for a task like sowing, spraying pesticides or fertilizer is the same for everyone in ones area, no difference between doing just a single acre or 1000. Guess who can afford a week or two of breakdown time

Those are all easily replaceable parts except for maybe the cracked frame, and that is repairable. Maybe you just suck at maintenance?

New equipment is nice at times, but saying the old stuff is not useful and completely worn out when it needs a bit of service is peak consooooooooooomerism. Go get another loan from Mr. Shekelburg and buy that new tractor, so I can get a sweet deal on your old perfectly serviceable equipment...

Small tractors are surprisingly capable but I absolutely wouldn't buy one without a loader already installed. It will change how you approach everything. Ironically the same could be said about having a proper, hydraulic 3 point hitch. Rear PTO is super handy too, I fabbed up a wood chipper that is so much fucking better than a standalone unit.

Another thing, try to buy a tractor as a package, ie get one that already has all the shit you need. Finding specific attachments for a tractor that is already 30 years old is a fucking hassle. Also, Cat 0 is a pain in the ass to work with. If I was buying again, I'd be looking for something hydrostatic, 4wd, and cat 1. Look on CL/FB for grandpa died kind of deals where the kids don't want anything to do with any of it.

That Magnatrac will rip the shit out of the ground with those tracks. Even my rubber tracked chinese mini ex does.

I want to buy a hobby tractor to move dirt piles and gravel around my yard. The idiots on FB want $20k for the tiniest shittiest 15 hp kubota or john deere. Meanwhile you can get giant machines for the same price. Specifically theres probably a dozen Case 580 backhoes for $20k, some of them have fairly low hours.

Is there any major pitfall to just buying a bigger tractor / loader / backhoe? Ive worked on cars and trucks pretty extensively but this would be my first heavy machinery

aside from turn radius and weight? i guess not.
On the flipside as a farm boy i dont understand the weird fascination with these tiny cabless asian shitboxes. They aint cheap, they offer the bare minimum features. Like for the price of pic i could right now buy a 100hp with ac, big boy hydraulics and electronic draft control.
If turn radius is of concern i would look for a 4 or better 3 cylinder without 4WD, it does make a big difference

I can't speak on asian tractors, but I do have perspective on american compact utility tractors from mexico.
Hydrostatic transmission, once you use a good one you'll love it for loader work or tighter spaces, but there are only three ranges, one for driving down the road, one for loader work or mowing, and the last for anything going into the ground, which is extremely slow, but imagine the smoothest clutch you have ever felt and multiply the smoothness by ten and then imagine all that you have to do is touch one pedal to speed up, and let off to slow down. I have used the brakes maybe a handful of times, and it is all to prevent rolling down a pretty steep hill. The bad part is that you need to set the hand brake if you aren't dead level, otherwise it will slowly roll down the hill without you knowing.
The rops folds down so you can fit into tighter spaces, whereas a cab can't, but god damn when I'm mowing in the summer I want even an unconditioned cab. The dirt and dust is fucking ridiculous.
Really, they're a niche product for hobby farming or livestock operations, mainly poultry farming where the chicken huts are open enough for a tractor, but not tight enough to require a skid steer or when the user will need to use pto driven implements and doesn't want to use hydraulic implements on a skid steer.
As for turn radius, it turns about as tight as a 2wd tractor if you lightly use the split brake and it is out of 4wd. once you go into 4wd, the thing doesn't turn worth a shit unless you are in really thick mud.
Again, niche product for small acreages, and the lack of a cab when doing anything that creates dust is a nightmare, but they can be pretty capable and are extremely useful if you need them.

Not that anon, but I can buy a 130ish hp 1086 for $9000 locally. Not electronic draft control but still it's a full size tractor. Can also buy a 966 for $7000 which is a 90hp tractor. And those are just two that I have been eyeballing lately because I'm an IH guy.

I bought a 4366 last year for $3000. Lol.

Small tractors have a high retard tax on them... Probably because they are easier to haul and fit into tight back yards much easier.

The reason these are so cheap is only hobbyist with a hand full of acres can make use o them, the chute is not high enough for a modern tipping trailer.

I bought a 1480 international combine for $3000 last year too. Only has around 1600 hours on it or something like that. Thinking about building it into a sprayer. Mount some wide as hell booms to the front of it and remove all the grain stuff. Relocate the engine and hydro pumps right behind the cab and install a 1000 gallon tank behind that over the rear axle... Just dunno if I really want to invest that much time into building it. Could have nabbed a john deere spray rig for $24 k with 90' booms and a stainless main tank. I dunno man, I don't like spraying much, but I'm going to have to do it more often, and my 30' boom 3 point sprayer is not much fun.

can a telehandler work as a tractor
why are some of these so cheap
whats a general purpose workshop machine other than a forklift
Anonymous No.2877891 [Report] >>2877996
>>2877881
Not sure what you mean by "work as a tractor". But telehandlers sometimes have auxiliary outputs for certain machinery, but telehandlers are basically designed to be forklifts with boom arms instead of driving right up to where the cargo is going. Spider lifts are a similar machine, but a little more versatile as well.

A skid-steer (wheels or tracks) can work as a fork lift and cart specific things around. The downside is they have very limited lift and aren't as suited to be a fork lift. The good thing is they can have a multitude of attachments on the front.

Most equipment like this is left outside, and hydraulic work is never cheap. Neither is diesel engine repairs as commonly found on these machines. Do you spend $20,000 repairing hydraulics and engine, or do you just buy a new unit for $40,000?

What are you needing for a regular work process?

Oh it's been a great machine for the month or so I've had it so far. The tandem transmissions are a nice addition and someones already welded hooks to the bucket. It already has a cat 0 three point attached, just missing a pto to run a tiller with. If I get lucky, I might be able to snag a oem tiller for this which already has the drive shaft integrated. If I had one thing to complain about, it would probably be about how tight the clutch is. Anything less than to the floor and it'll pop a wheelie on you!

A lot of walk behind equipment that is common in the US like mowers, brush hogs, and snowblowers are essentially two wheel tractors with the implement permanently attached. I'd be hesitant to use one like a tractor though, because it's likely the transmission was not built to haul heavy loads or rip up ground.

hey guys. am i a tractor?

my parents had this snapper mower for a few years. they stopped using it and it sat for the last 3. I picked it up and got it running. it had issues with the breather and blowby.
now it runs fine.
i pressure washed every inch of it and lubed everything. it runs pretty good now, engine still surges a small bit. the fuel cap vent is broken, and the oil cap seal isnt holding, i need to replace both still.
belt and clutch are good, boots are good, blade is good.
it does need a new battery. how does the battery charge on this thing? there is nothing but a coil plug on this thing. sounds like it needs to be kept on a tickle charger when not used.

im thinking of selling it, i dont need it for anything.
what can I get from out? all examples I see online are around $200 and are in worse or non running conditions.

They don't need to be super sharp (or even very sharp at all) unless you're running a mulching deck and blades on a golf-course quality lawn.
Just take the blade, lock it in a vise, hit it with a side grinder and either maintain what edge angle is there, or guess and throw a reasonably acute grind on it.
You can take brand new blades, grind the edges flat and they will still trim your average lawn as well as razor sharp ones.

If it's a reasonably modern tele, the reason it's cheap is because it's worn the fuck out, or has loads of problems. Usually crippling hydraulic leaks or stuff like hub drives that are mulched or transmissions that have shit the bed.

Check fuel lines and fittings all the way to the injection pump. Anywhere there is an elbow or restriction that can get clogged with crap. Had a couple check valves on my 8630 that got little bits of rubber stuck in them. Would run fine and pull decent but bog down when pulling and turning to the left. Never really smoked black smoke like it was fueling good when pulling. Finally found the clogged up fittings and got it running good and probably gained another 50 horses! Lol. For some reason it didn't have any filters before the lift pump so i added a cheap steel case inline fuel filter to keep the chunks out in the future.

Sometimes those primer pumps can leak and let your lift pump suck some air into the fuel stream. Pull apart your lift pump and check that the check valves are sealing good. I have re-built some of them by putting new bearing balls and re-seating the check valve seat with a countersink or some valve lapping compound on a countersunk screw head and running it with a drill.

I fully understand that buying parts piecemeal adds up quickly. A non running tractor or loader is worth barely more than scrap around here though unless you part it out and ship the parts across the country. Sounds like the engine on this does run and it came with some good tires and the shipping cost was figured in so that does bring the value up some. Also sounds like the tractor availability over there is more scarce, so he probably did pretty decent on the deal. I wouldn't have paid that much for something in that condition where I'm at because the amount of work it would need would quickly make it not worth it for me.

I smoked a bunch of crack and now I've been thinking about how I could design a 12ft drum shredder that mounts to the front of the blade of my dozer with quick attach pins on each side.
I was thinking like two 9in drums running parallel horizontal with 5.75ft sections for a big carrier bearing in the middle. Spinning opposed to each other.
Chain drive on each side goes up to a input shafts which connects via driveshafts to a engine/transmission unit out of a small front wheel drive car. Utilising it's automatic transmission, it should be fairly easy to use as a power unit for this.
If I figure out speed sensors on the drums, I can use the engine ecu's cruise control to set the drum speed and it should in theory maintain that and raise/lower the throttle to meet load demand.

Is it viable to use two horizontal drums with overlapping feet to obliterate thick brush? The drums would spin to eject the mulch towards the blade I guess to get the cutting action, so there would have to be sufficient space for that to work. Though I would be able to put the transmission in reverse if chaff builds up I think.
